NEW YORK (Fortune) - The prospect of a bird flu outbreak may be panicking people around the globe, but it's proving to be very good news for Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and other politically connected investors in Gilead Sciences, the California biotech company that owns the rights to Tamiflu, the influenza remedy that's now the most-sought after drug in the world.

It is so nice to know that such an outstanding Cabinet member will be able to profit from everyone elses' misfortune.

If not, is the implication that Rumsfeld is wicked because he invests in the stock market? Is there something sinister about investing in Gilead Sciences?
This whole thread seems pointless to me. -
Exactly, Petrel, this seems to be a unthinking condemnation. What is wrong with being a good investor?

I agree with you last 2 posters. What's wrong with making good investments? As a Christian he is supposed to invest God's money wisely.

Donald Rumsfeld is a Christian?

I don't know anything about the state of Mr. Rumsfeld's soul. However, I'm pretty sure that it is irrelevant to the question of whether its appropriate to slam someone for being fortunate enough to invest in a company that's showing increasing profits. Unless you can prove that Rumsfeld engineered avian flu for his personal benefit, all of the criticisms in this thread are groundless. If you read the article Rumsfeld has decided to hold onto the stock rather than selling it so that it won't give the appearance that he is profiting off some prior knowledge of avian flu that is not available to the rest of us. Since most wealthy people hand their money over to others to invest in portfolios for them, my suspicion is that the stock in Gilead Sciences was bought prior to this whole concern over avian flu and that Rumsfeld did not even know he owned the stock until recently.

I think it's a bit idiotic to force our politicians to refrain from any topic represented in their portfolio. None of them wold ever say anything. Oh wait, maybe that's not so bad after all. -
Still, what that link has to do with the OP is beyond me. -
