By grace through faith.
The response of their faith was to walk according to the law as the law revealed their sinfulness and need for a savior. -

Look at Noah..
He is the first person in all of scripture to be called 'righteous' and was said of him prior to that that he was a just man who walked with God.
-
"And he (Abraham) believed in the Lord, and he counted it to him for righteousness. Gen. 15:6
"But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident for, The just shall live by faith." Gal. 3:11
Even in the OT times people were justified by faith and not by works, and it's still that way. It has never been by works or keeping the law, although works are a testimony to the fact that a person is saved. -

They were saved by faith in the true God....
From Hebrews...

But not some "generic" faith, or just believe in God (like demons do). Many playing games in our churches today have "faith" in "faith" and not Jesus.
They had revelation of God's truth and the faith was in the object - the Messiah/Redeemer
Great example to study is Job. He saw holiness and sovereignty of God and sinfulness of self. He saw the Redeemer and claimed the promises. (Job lived before Abraham)
Job = Salvation by grace through faith demonstrated by the "good work" of moral faithfulness to the very limited revelation
OT = Salvation by grace through faith demonstrated by the "good work" of following the revelation of God in Torah.
Jesus' Day = Salvation by grace through faith demonstrated by the "good work" of baptism of repentance and obedience to Messiah.
NT = Salvation by grace through faith demonstrated by the "good work" of walking in obedience to the full revelation of the Word.
Eph 2:8-9, THEN the good work demonstrating it in 2:10 -
Well, the end is near. I actually agree with Dr. Bob.
The good works that were produced in OT saints were what is today called the fruit of the Spirit. Demons believe, but they do not bear the fruit of the Spirit. That is the difference in their belief and a true Christian belief.
Because of the faith and repentance of a true believer, he is given the Holy Spirit and will bear fruit produced by Him.
Demons believe, but they will never repent of their sin, will never bow the knee to Christ, and will never bear spiritual fruit. And neither will a false professor of Christ. -
Adam to the last person and all in between are saved by grace through faith in Christ.

16Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
8And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.
9So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham
18For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.
19Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.
24Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
25But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.
26For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. -
"For the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart." -
This is amazing, not only do I agree with the posts so far, but I see consensus on BaptistBoard. Wow.

Well, I am certainly glad for it. This is after all the central doctrine of salvation.
If we did not all believe in Salvation all of faith and apart from works then some would not even be Christians on this board.
I did not always have reformed leanings but I never believed in salvation by works.
Good to see the others on here do not either. -
