Call it the "John the Baptist Join the Baptist Convention". Mild joke. Sorry. gotta have sum humor with all the hot debates going on y'know.
"Southern" is a, IMHO, dumb thing to put on a denominational tagline. Sounds discriminatory or bigoted. Yet I have been member of SBC church. I prefer not to comment which Baptist I'm with now, cause thar's so much strife and stuff about "demoninations" I mean "denominations".
Howsabout: Universal Baptist Correlation? -
I would vote against any name change. I agree that the name is a well known name and think that changing the name would confuse people since there are so many super liberal groups now.

Although I'm not an SBCer, I think it would make sense. The "southern" connotation lost its historical significance long ago. On the other side of the coin, the Northen Baptist Convention changed to "American Baptist" long before this.

What's in a name? As an SBC'er, I'd like to see the name changed to BCA: Baptist Church in America, Baptist Convention in America, or Baptist Congregations in America.
-
Or the "Nothing, No Name Church Convention."
-
If the name is good why change it?
-
I'm against the change in names!!! Graham has "flipped his wig" if he believes that simply changing a name will make us better witnesses---changing the SBC's name won't get one more person out witnessing and ministering and doing mission work then there already is----its not "Change the name and we'll do better!"---rather its, "Change the heart and we'll do better!!"

I don't want the name to change.

In accordance with the name change, my church will now be known as "Bob's Country Bunker".

The Northern Baptists (organized nationally in 1907) changed its name to AMERICAN Baptists some time back - they've changed it again and I can't even remember what it is now.
Hmmmm. Change = can't remember what. Might that not happen to the SBC too?
It would be GREAT if the liberal SBC who have gone the direction of the CBF totally divorce themselves.
Better yet if they quit mislabeling themselves as Baptist! -
haha...true Dr.Bob
I seriously doubt the SBC will change its name. -

Proud to be both SBC and baptist. -
Right on, Mike! Me too!

How about "C.O.B" Convention of Baptists?
It is a fair comment that the CBF are to liberal and should seperate from the SBC, I think that with the same brush the KJVO baptists should also leave. Being as that doctrine openly violates the Baptist Distinctives.
Recently I saw a film called "Cold Mountain" starring Nicole Kidman and Jude Law. What surprised me a little was the bitter hatred that was shown to be going on with marauding gangs doing all manner of things to those people on the other side. Sure those things have passed away now but of that is true of bitter hatred from one side to another, maybe it is better for churces to remain in the nuetral postion as to geographical names. All that share in the Baptist Distinctives are Baptists, Yet we need to have a global view for our church.
