I hadn't heard of some of the groups so left those blank. I don't listen to the radio and haven't had money for new CD's in several years. We were taken to see the Gaither's Homecoming in November and REALLY enjoyed it. Our Nick LOVES S/G.
Diane -
I created this thread, similar to the one created by SaggyWoman, for fans of southern gospel music. I'm not up on all the newest groups, but I consulted Singing News and posts in the Music Ministry forum on the subject. So hopefully this includes some of the newer popular groups. It will include others who no longer exist or sing together, but nevertheless remain among the most popular. If your favorite group was left off, feel free to name them in the thread.
Enjoy. -
Wow, I checked a lot of groups. Some of them, I have only ever heard some of their songs or I only like half their songs, but there are definitely some of their songs that I like. Thanks for creating this thread...I hope more SGM fans come and check it out. I mentioned in one of the other threads that I like the Rochesters, but some people consider them bluegrass anyway.
Diane, you should listen to WOAK online on weekday evenings starting at 9:30...they play great SGM songs.
I don't like when SGM becomes too contemporary. I like it more traditional and I like quartets, although there are some soloists I like too...definitely Carroll Roberson...and I like family groups. -
I checked The Isaacs and Karen Peck and New River. (I forgot about Karen and New River when I mentioned a few of my favorites on the other thread.)
If I hear Quartet singing I tune our pretty quickly. I like SGM if its not the traditional "quartet" style. And if it has strong bluegrass tendancies I get MUCH more interested...REAL quick!
I'm not sure I have ever heard 2 human beings on this planet ever harmonise as beautifully as Sonya and Becki Isaacs do.
Blessings,
Mike -
Interesting results...
Doesn't seem like many people have heard of Signature Sound.
Great choices, I noticed a couple of groups no longer performing due to death(s) of members.
Catherals and Goodmans.
I think if we want to include groups no longer in existance, consider the following:
The Rambos (Dottie, Buck and Reba)
The Bishops (Kenneth, Kenny and Mark)
Family Harmony IMHO is the best.
God Bless and I am happy we are getting SGM recognized here. -
RP, what is signature sound like? I have heard of them, but never heard any of their songs that I remember. Maybe once or twice on the radio but it didn't really stick in my mind what the group name was. Are they similar to Gold City, the Cathedrals, or neither?
-
I like most all Southern Gospel groups or solos. I noticed the only soloist you had on the list was Ivan Parker. He is a favorite of mine. The Cathedrals were and will always be my favorite group, but I love the Hinsons and Goodmans (especially when Sam and Rusty were still alive). Kenny Hinson was the greatest voice ever. The Bishops were a great group. I guess Greater Vision would be my one of my favorites now. They are the most awarded trio ever in gospel music. The Isaacs give me chill bumps sometimes.
I just heard a beautiful song by a group called Testify. It is called "With A Name Like His". Y'all should also check out a group called Paid In Full. They have a wonderful tenor singer. -
I LOVE Signature Sound and hubby has said he'll get me a CD since they're not on the DVD he got me for Christmas.
The Issacs are incredible. I was blown AWAY. We saw them with the Homecoming in November. -
I tended to vote for all the traditional 4-part harmony groups.
My all-time favorite would still be the Statesmen from the 1950's.
I have some of the remakes. Don't go calculating my age!
We have been to Gaither Homecoming concerts several times and loved them.
I still remember hearing the Happy Goodmans on Jubilee! every Sunday morning. My grandfather wouldn't miss it.
Karen -
I've watched/ listened to the Gaither and Homecoming Friends 3 times today. It's a LONG DVD too.
Anyone know the group Won by One? We saw them at Dollywood in 1995 and I've got many of the DVD's. They change members pretty often which does bother me tho. -
I have heard them on radio and they have a good sound, but I've never seen them in concert and don't know anything about the group. It bothers me also when a group keeps changing members.
-
Diane,
I've never seen them live, but hopefully one day I will.
In a similar vein, Sonya Isaacs put out a solo record a few years ago. Not gospel, but its clean. No adultery/drinking/cheating songs on it at all. Well, there is a song on there called
"Barefoot in the Grass". I'll tell you what, if anyone has lost a brother, sister, or a son or daughter, be careful if you listen to that song. Dont be driving. I lost my younger sister a few years ago and I had no idea what was coming as that song played. I must have cried for about 1/2 hour as a result of that thing. But it was a good cry. ;)
Here are the lyrics...
BAREFOOT IN THE GRASS
Verse 1:
Mom brought us lemonade
On a Coca-Cola tray
Ice rattling in plastic glasses
We'd see who drink the fastest
In a split second we were gone
Racing cross the fresh cut lawn
And we were running barefoot in the grass
Barefoot in the grass
Verse 2:
When I was twelve I started liking boys
She was still playing with her toys
I pointed out that she was only nine
And I didn't need her tagging behind
Then I would jump on my red bicycle
I'd look back and I 'd get tickled
She was running barefoot in the grass
Barefoot in the grass
Chorus:
And it brings a smile to my face
Seeing her, no shoes in a footrace
Running just as fast as she can
Waving her hands and calling out my name
Little Sister
Oh, I wonder if she knows how bad I miss her
Verse 3
I remember being so confused
When mom and daddy broke the news
I never even saw her cry
Though I could tell she was hurting inside
But, now I'm sure she's got a full head of hair
And I know that somewhere up there
She's running barefoot in the grass
Barefooot in the grass
Chorus again:
And it brings a smile to my face
Seeing her, no shoes in a footrace
Running just as fast as she can
Waving her hands and calling out my name
Little Sister
Oh, I wonder if she knows how bad I miss her
1st verse again:
Mom brought us lemonade
On a Coca-Cola tray
Ice rattling in plastic glasses
We'd see who drink the fastest
Love to see you run
Little sister, run
Barefoot in the grass, barefoot in the grass
God bless,
Mike -
Ernie Haase, the tenor from the Cathedrals is the leader of this group.
Tim Duncan is the Bass singer, and a couple of new faces (btw both of them are from Indiana, so along with Ernie, they have enough Hoosiers to start calling themselves Hoosier Sound)
I think the name, applies to their sound... good four part harmony and the more traditional quartet sound.
You will be hearing from them (IMHO)
God Bless -
I can see Vestal and Howard and the rest walking up those steps.
That reference brought back some memories for me.
God Bless -
We never missed the Gospel Jubilee. The Goodmans and the Florida Boys were favorites. I can't remember all the groups but it helped kindle my love of SGM and the quartet sound. A few years back the Palmetto State Quartet did a remake of the "Jubilee" song. Remember that? I loved that song.

Tim Duncan, the name is very familiar . . .Gold City?
(now I'll read the rest of the thread :D ) -
Just looked at Signature Sound web-site.
Not the guy from Gold City (way too young )
Are they related?
What is the name of the bass singer with Gold City? -
The Bass from Gold City, I believe is Tim Riley. -
My favorite group is Lee and Cindy Condran. They are a husband and wife team, locacted near Harrisburg, Pa.
I also enjoy Bill Gaither Trio (thats not the Gatiher Vocal)
