Frankly, I don't think it should be either on currency or in the Pledge because it is untrue, and has always been untrue, for our nation as a whole.
Faith and trust in God is something that can only be possessed by individuals, not institutions. And if we allow members of an institution (such as citizens participate in our government) to have freedom of religion (including freedom to abstain from religion), then the slogan is untrue.
Even if we pretended that religious liberty was not from God and chose to impose religious conformity upon everyone, I doubt the slogan would even be true then.
I think the slogan can only be used truthfully by churches with a voluntary and committed membership. -
This country is now full of on enough hypocrites...let's not add to the fire. Believers have a hard enough time trusting God, so I really don't expect the lost to trust Him. These issues stopped getting under my skin when I fully realized lost people act like lost people. I'm done trying to dress them up as christians when they want nothing of it.

Mod note: Title corrected by another understanding teacher :) -
Remove it from both the pledge and currency. Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's and unto God what is God's.

Did the poll close? I don't see how to vote?
I trust God and don't mind if other people trust Him either. So WE trust God works for me... -
Chuck, it's still open for me on that link on my home computer.

At this point 83% says no it should not be moved.
-
And I agree with them. When I voted, it was overwhelming to keep the words on there.
Thanks for the poll, Bitsy.
Me thinks that MSNBC is very surprised. :) -
Thanks for fixing the title Sue ;)

Civil religion has played a large role in our national politic for a very long time. Most unchurched people feel good about religious slogans because it gives them a sense of spirituality with no commitment.
Historically, Baptists have opposed civil religion, but too few Baptists today have been informed of their heritage. -

We shouldn't even have a national currency. Banks should be allowed to issue & represent their own notes, and they should be allowed to print anything they want on it.
-
The reason the government steps in is usually because someone in the public has failed in their obligations. Money was in private hands not too many years ago. Remember the depression? Those banks failed miserably and we all suffered greatly.
So long as the coin still says one cent that is all I need.
Cheers,
