Trump's Syria plan reveals a master strategist in the White House

It's just too delicious. President Trump ordered U.S. special forces out of Syria to a chorus of howling Democrats and all the old, experienced hands at State and, supposedly, the military. (I had doubts as well.) Democrats yelled that all hell was about to break loose. The Pentagon pulled its hair. Europe trembled and blanched. The Mideast girded for something awful.

Everybody thought we had to keep our troops around so the Turks wouldn't invade Northern Syria and kill off all the Kurds. Everybody wanted them to negotiate with the Kurds and figured the only way to do that was little by little, by getting allies to reason with Turkey and hem and haw and maybe buy her off as in times past. Meanwhile, we had to keep the two ancient enemies, Kurds and Turks, apart.

Negotiations would ever happen only if our troops stayed.

Trump saw the situation differently. As beautifully laid out by Sundance at Conservative Treehouse, removing our guys would leave the intransigent Turks vulnerable to an alliance against them of their many enemies in the region. This thought didn't occur to Turkish president Recep Erdoğan, who at first seemed delighted that we were leaving and promptly dispatched his troops into Syria, as everybody had predicted he would.

AT's Thomas Lifson reports that ABC News was so appalled that it ran footage from a Kentucky gun range video, called it the Turkish invasion, and heaped abuse on Trump for atrocities committed against Kurds. Even the usually level-headed Andrew Malcolm took the president severely to task for abandoning our Kurdish allies. George Conway, who has never had a good word to say about the president, styles the troop withdrawal a blunder of historical proportions.

Not so fast, fellas. The actual result hasn't been quite what everyone expected. Erdoğan suddenly understood the box he was in when Trump authorized Treasury secretary Mnuchin to prepare sanctions against Turkey. By themselves, sanctions haven't succeeded much in that part of the world. But in concert with the departure of the U.S., they became a scary signal that Turkey was all by her lonesome. Having steadfastly refused to negotiate, Erdoğan now nervously rang up Trump and asked for an emergency conference. Trump sent Vice President Pence and national security adviser O'Brien to mediate negotiations with the Kurds.

These are the long sought negotiations, brought about by U.S. troops leaving.

Only Donald Trump saw it — just as only Donald Trump got North Korea to the table, forced the Chinese to play fair, and got the Mexicans to handle the immigrant caravans on our southern border. Trump once again exhibits strategic insight not seen in the White House since George Washington.

Um that is footage that a dumb mews station chose to show damage last week. Nothing to do with what I said at all.

Turkey has fired into Syria near U.S. Troops. Unless you are going to call the military liars. Your attempt at disinformation is lazy. Unless you are going to tell me that Turkey hasn’t done anything at all in which case you are just not paying attention.

A guy praising a “genius” plan to sell out allies, put our military in the middle of an artillery impact area and empower a stronger Russian foothold into middle eastern affairs? It’s also a narrative that happens to be...well immediately proven wrong by real world news.

No, that doesn’t (unintelligible) my narratives (plural?) at all.

Because guess what...it’s my own homemade opinion.

My, you seem to have changed your tune on U.S. interventionism:

    What to do

I would've thought you'd be in agreement with Trump getting us out from what we can't afford in lives or money.

Interventionism has already happened here. We propped these guys up to fight ISIS and let them do the dying and then we royally toss them aside. We could have planned our withdrawal with them to give them a chance instead of just pulling the rug from beneath them leaving them flapping in the breeze. It is incredibly short sighted and self defeating.

I guess we'll see what happens.

You seem to forget, Trump is keeping a campaign promise:

Poll: US voters back Trump’s withdrawal from Syria, Afghanistan

Man you people are so short sighted. Keep your promises. It doesn’t mean you have to keep them in the most self defeating way possible. Goodness gracious. He is just a man. He will come and he will go but the games he played this last week are going to follow us.

I promise you this. Our days of operating in the Middle East are far from over. We did damage this past week and people were watching. There is going to come a day where we regret how this played out. Russia took advantage of a desperate situation and we let them do it. We are not going to be trusted for awhile over there.

Damage? You mean like on the scale of the vacuum we created by taking out Saddam, that gave rise to ISIS? Or the 1953 CIA backed coup in Iran that ultimately brought about the reign of the Ayatollahs? You mean like on that scale? Lol, get real chicken little. The sky is not going to fall.

I’m not okay with Turkey firing artillery near US Troops. Call me chicken little all you want.

According to Military Times 50 to 100 Special Ops were involved & moved to other locations in Syria. This was done to protect these troops, & keep them out of crossfire. What did the Kurds do? Began releasing ISIS from detention. You fall for the hysteria? Sounds like it. The families of those Spec Ops are thanking Trump.

There were troops under artillery fire. I doubt they were grateful. Also reading that Troops were unhappy with the betrayal.

Thankfully the last bastion of truth over at Fox News would never...oops

Fox News uses pictures of Eagles players praying to pretend they were kneeling for national anthem

    But wait there is more!

“In September 2010, FNC anchor Sean Hannity was criticized notably by Stewart and CNN anchor Howard Kurtz, for selectively editing a video of an Obama speech on his program. Before playing the clip, Hannity remarked that there was a "rare moment of honesty" in Obama's speech.”

Now that is something. There are also less important lies like using different photos to make rallies appear bigger than they are but lies none the less.

While the choice to show the range was really dumb...Turkey has actually ya know shelled Syria.

Think Progress shows a photo which is obviously, for ANYONE who’s ever watched football.......not taken during the anthem. But you are not left, uh uh, no, not a bit, not ever.
Then you show something from 2010. 2010. 2010. This type of editing is a daily occurrence on msm.
Did you find the ‘meltdown’ presser to be authentic yesterday? You know, when the three stooges rushed out to the cameras to do their schtick? All planned. In the meeting, Trump passed out paperwork on what they were there to discuss. Pelosi never looked at it, but turned it over on the table & smirked at Trump. That was the beginning of the dem performance of the day.
