What part of "But now, whoever has a purse, let him take it, and likewise a wallet. Whoever has none, let him sell his cloak, and buy a sword" do you think I don't understand?

I would prefer confining liberals to insane asylums. Both would be equally un Constitutional.

So you don't think killing people with bombs constitutes a crime of violence?

Concerning Jesus' instructions - a sword does not equal a gun. Personally, I am certainly not against owning arms. The second amendment is not absolute as I doubt anyone on this thread thinks an individual should own a bazooka, or a tank, or a nuclear bomb.

The idea of confiscating 300,000,000 guns in this country is not reasonable. The United States has always had an extremely violent culture and I certainly don't see that changing during the lifetime of anyone posting in this thread. We can try to pass sensible laws, but ultimately we have to spread the gospel and trust in God's protection of ourselves, our family, and our friends, within the context of His sovereign will.

The sword was the common personal defense weapon of that era. The sidearm (pistol/revolver) is the common personal defense weapon of today.

Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword. - Matthew 26:52

The Second Amendment reads "keep (own) and bear (carry) arms.

One man can carry a LAW (bazookas have not been in common military use for decades), but show me the man who can carry a tank. Or a nuke. I would imagine they would get pretty tired after the first couple hours or so.

So, did Jesus contradict Himself, or is the context different? (Hint. He did not contradict Himself.) :)

No, I was talking about crimes of violence. It was you who kept trying to limit the scope of the discussion to try to support your unsupportable claims.

The issue of Jesus' statement about buying a sword is not exactly without controversy among Christians as to what it means. I certainly think it is wrong to use it as a statement for Christians to go beyond self defense and to engage in war against a government over "rights". John Gill said, in part, about Luke 22:36: "Jesus does not mean that his disciples are to repel force by force, but that they are to be ready to defend his cause against attack. Changed conditions bring changed needs. This language can be misunderstood as it was then."

Agreed, but I do wonder the founders intent. Many at that time privately owned artillery pieces. They did not say "regulated." They said "well regulated." At that time, in that context, regulated meant possessing the full armament of a REGULAR soldier. The founders did not want an armed citizenry, they wanted a well armed citizenry with military weapons as issued the regular army.
