No one posting on this board was a slave, neither was his parents, and I doubt his grandparents.
Likewise, no one posting on this board has ever owned a slave, nor his parents, and I doubt his grandparents. -
But some of us did descend from slaves and some descended from slave owners, why keep the memories alive?
-
Because it's history, Rocko9. Do you think we ought to just forget the period from 1861-65?
By the way, since people jump on Bush for shifting war aims in Iraq, the War Between the States did not begin with the Union looking to free the slaves. That became an aim of the war about halfway through. If the Yankees had won a quick victory within the first year, then the Union would have been preserved and slavery would have continued.
Also, the Stars and Stripes served a lot longer as the flag of a nation that endorsed slavery than did the Confederate flag.
Therefore, using the logic of some, those offended should be even more offended every time they see Old Glory than we they see a Confederate flag. -
In 1861 there was a vote by the Cherokee legislature to secede from the United States. They paid dearly for that vote. Most of the land that had originally been granted to the Cherokee nation was swindled away by the winners of the War between the States.
Wanna talk about what General Sherman did to the South? Get me on a rant. -
Perhaps blacks and Indians should both be offended by the Stars and Stripes if they want to take offense at a flag.
For the record, I have a desktop Confederate battle flag in my study and I have a desktop U.S. flag on my desk at work. As I posted earlier today, based on what has happened since 1865 I am glad that the Union was preserved(thinking logically), but as a Southerner I still wish that the Confederacy had won(thinking emotionally). -
Old Glory represents a nation and a willingness to advance decent civility
the confederate flag did not.It wanted to hold on to its' old ways. -
I disagree, Rocko9. Have you ever read the CSA constitution?
We'll just have to agree to diasgree, I guess. Just don't interfere with my right to display a Confederate flag, okay. -
