In some Bibles, especially older ones, you see tagged onto the end of the last verse of each epistle something like "Written to the Romans from Corinthus, [and sent] by Phebe servant of the church at Cenchrea." (see Rom 16:27). These words are part of the manuscripts.
Two questions:
1. Does this type of closing remark have a technical name?
2. Are these closing words "scripture" or just "documentation"? Why?

BrianT asked:

Subscription. (By contrast the notes at the beginnings of some Psalms are superscriptions.)
2. Are these closing words "scripture" or just "documentation"? Why?
They are later human additions. Many of them are believed to be erroneous. -
Cool, thanks.

Could someone help me (I can't hobble down steps to my library presently)
Did the AV1611 have these Superscriptions and Subscriptions?
Are these s&s inspired form the Greek text or simply added in the English?
Were these in other English translations like Wycliffe, Tyndale, Great Bible?
If so, when did the AV1611 get revised to eliminate these?
Thanks. -
^^I don't know about Wycliffe, but Tyndale's NT has the subscriptions. Presumably, the Great Bible did as well. And some post-1611 editions of the later KJV also contain them (including the first Bible I ever owned as a child, a pocket-sized KJV NT).

Dr. Bob Griffin asked:

Indeed it did, according to my Nelson reprint.
Are these s&s inspired form the Greek text or simply added in the English?
They're part of the manuscript tradition.
If so, when did the AV1611 get revised to eliminate these?
Not all AVs have been. Even my electronic KJVs have them (i.e. Online Bible, the Sword Project). -
Thanks! Not having access to my library is the pits!

Yeah, my mother broke her leg slipping on some ice back in March; I gather she lived for the next month or so in the same chair. Bummer.
