I actually try to use these names in both private and public prayers. While I appreciate people calling me Robert, I respond with more genuine friendliness to Bob because it is a special "pet name".
Since God's special pet name is YHWH (sometimes called Jehovah), I like to use it in prayer. Exodus 6:3
quote:
I appeared to Avra'am, to Yitzak and to Yacov as El Shaddai, but by my name h'YHWH I did not make myself known to them.

Hence I pray to:
>YHWH ROPHE (the Lord Who Heals)
>YHWH TZIDKENU (the Lord Our Righteousness)
>YHWH NISSI (the Lord Our Banner)
>YHWH SABBAOTH (the Lord of Hosts) -
Amen, Bob!!!!!!!!!!!

I think Jesus taught us to pray saying, "Our Father."
Speaking of the names of God, I would recommend a book of the same name by Andrew Jukes, The Names of God in Holy Scripture. It is not your run of the mill treatment of the subject.
Other books by Andrew Jukes:
