"the search for new sources of oil will be transformed into a quest for entirely new sources of energy"

Eventually, yes. When we find a source of energy that stores energy better than gasoline and more cheaply. Which I doubt will happen during the working years of anyone over forty years old today.

And the government won't be the entity that discovers it or develops it.

Good for you, blackbird. Congrats! :)

I imagine a lot of pension funds, IRA's, and 401(k)'s have benefitted as well.

Unfortunately, the oil company that I work for has not participated in these greatly increased earnings year over year due to the repairs to our refinery that was badly flooded by Hurrican Katrina and just came back on line a couple of months ago. Not only have we had the repair bills but it has also meant that we've been missing out on the high refining margins on about 3,000,000 barrels per month since the end of last August. Therefore, our stock has been basically flat for the past year.

By the way, blackbird, through yesterday the ExxonMobil share price during the past year has only risen 13.56%.

Okay, here's a thought. Actually, my son thought of it. If oil reserves are depleted, people will be riding horses again, armies will be riding horses again. My son's theory is that if the oil reserves in the Middle East are depleted, the countries like Saudi Arabia will be poverty striken; the masses will rise up and overthrow the sheikdoms (rulers) & the rich and converge upon Israel for the BOA literally riding horses. It's a thought.

We will not reach peak oil for at least several decades, maybe not even until at least the next century.

The peak oil doom-and-gloomsters are wrong.

I always wondered what folks did BEFORE gasoline powered vehicles, etc. made the scene!!

Of course, they rode horses---or walked---or canoed in a canoe with a paddle. Or rode the coal burning train!!!

Of course, in order to revert back to complete "Horse" power---there will have to be certain changes made. Concrete and asphalt road systems(including the Federal Interstate system) will have to be torn up and hauled off---unless Horses are "shoed" they cannot------ummmmm---will not-- careen--zoom---gallop on either source of pavement---and then even if they're "shod"---the metal shoes can only go so far on an interstate system that is paved with concrete 12 inches thick

And this is what I ain't figured out yet----where OH where are they gonna house that many horses----personally---I won't mind reverting back to a total "Horse" powered system a bit!!!!

Ask him how many troops it would take to support a 2,000,000 man army. Ask him how that can be done logistically. And then ask him what would he do with all of his horses bio-degradable matter . . . ;)
