Gentlemen, do you tip your hat when you pass a lady?
Ladies, do you appreciate a man who does tip his hat when passing you?
Young folks, do have any ideal what I am talking about?

I always tip my hat at ladies or passing funerals. Gwenerally remove my hat when addessing ladies. Old habit, I suppose.

I very MUCH appreciate it!
Common decency/courtesy does not go unnoticed or unappreciated in my world.
My husband opens door for me constantly, whether we're in public, just getting in the car, or walking out our own front door.
IMO it is the mark of a true gentleman when he does stuff like this. I love and appreciate that he does this for me. CAN I open a door? Sure! But to have someone love me enough to make that extra effort day in and day out shows loyalty and constant thoughtfulness, and that is amazing to me.
Women who make snide remarks to such men are a disgrace to any decent female, and if men are discouraged or ready to stop being polite based on those vicious-minded women, please don't be! You have become more important than ever because we know those women exist and do that, so we think even higher of you now and secretly hope it's raining one day while those other women have their noises pointed straight up in the air! -
I am courteous to all women as that was how my mother taught me to be. -

The men in my neck of the woods don't tip their hats because they don't wear hats.
Well....there are the baseball caps and the hunting caps, but I don't think that's what Salty is talking about.
They do, however, nod their heads as if they were tipping their hats. Men in my community do that out of respect and we as women were trained to smile in return out of respect. -

I nod my head to both the men and the ladies if eye contact is made. Tipping the hat, imho, is something that is not practiced as often as it was several years ago, but it is still a nice gesture.

For the benefit of our new members - what say you

Tipping the hat goes back to the day of swords. The hat is always tipped with the right hand, the usual hand of reaching for the sword. So, it means peace as well as welcome.

Hard to tip a watch cap. Anyway, the women are now liberated which door swings both ways.

I guess I've been wrong.
I always took the hat off & held it out...I thought it meant THEY'D tip ME.

I think it is a very mannerly thing to do, like holding a door open etc.
I am ashamed when a woman does not have the courtesy to thank the gentleman for any small courtesy or at the very least give a smile in return.

Hubby always opens the door for me. Its gotten to the point that I just stand back and wait. I remember on our first date being so impressed.
The only problem was, I stood back and waited w my dad once, and he shut the door in my face. -
I do not wear a hat but I do try to open the door for my wife or any other ladies. If that was not the door they intended to go through then I force them too. Afterall, one can not let a courtesy go unnoticed.
