I thankfully haven't fought in any wars. Neither did my father. That's because my grandfathers by defeating Naziism, and their generation's post-war settlement in Europe, including NATO and the EU, ensured we did not have to. I hoped that my children would not have to either. But, sadly, that legacy that my grandfathers' generation fought for so hard is now being undermined by Brexit and the likes of Trump and the Nazis. So I really fear for the future now, not so much for me but for my kids. Truly scary times. So, no, I haven't fought in a war, thanks be to God, but if the English Defence League or Britain First marches in my town, I would leave my desk and my office and man the barricades against them, like the good folk in Charlottesville did. I'd probably get my head kicked in and need a new suit, but I would have done my small part.
