I've been on BB going on 7 years now and every year we get to recycle a handful of seasonal topics, beat them half to death and then move on to other things like alcohol consuming long-haired men singing CCM while card playing.
Now every Fall, nestled between supporting our Vets and the over-commercialism of Black Friday, there is a thread about the senseless slaughter of innocent fur-bearing creatures that answer to Bambi. This year? Nope, nada, nothing. I'm disappointed. A few years back someone inferred I was blood-thirsty seeing I could buy USDA certified meat at the store and didn't have to put fox urine on my boots to get it. He went on to insinuate that I hunted for the sport and derived too much pleasure from hiding in trees and shooting a high-powered rifle.
Well, he had me there. Putting a bullet into something the size of a softball from 250 yards will do that sometimes. My buddy and I went to camp last weekend and got the cabin ready. The rifle is sighted, the bunks are all made and the stands are all cleared. Come Saturday morning, while y'all are snug in your beds, I'll be sitting in a tree doing my part keeping that deer off the hood of your new car.
I leave for camp mid-day Friday. Spare me the disappointment and somebody - anybody - say something before it's too late and we'll have to start talking about Christmas trees and Santa Claus.
Very Disappointed @ BB

Have a great time and may you harvest well. :) My son would LOVE to go hunting someday!
-
Aren't you a little slow here? We already have deer in the freezer from muzzle-loading season.

Padre, if you MUST talk about your hunting exploits, the least you can do is share that meat with the rest of us who don't hunt. Not fair, reading your hunting posts and envisioning a nice tender deer steak simmering in the crockpot, only to find beans and cornbread in there again.
By the way, I saw a sight to make any deer hunter sick. While driving down the highway the other day, there were 2, 8-point bucks within 50 feet of each other, dead on the side of the road. Ugh. What a waste! -
I'm gonna "Ditto" what Padre said!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'd throw USDA beef down for a big ole plate of country fried Venison!!!:thumbs: -
My DH is a hunter and even though he hasn't been able to do as much as he has wanted to yet this season due to health reasons, he was blessed to get an 8 pt buck and we have been enjoying that venison from our freezer for a few weeks already. Let me tell you, the processing fee was MUCH MUCH MUCH lower than the same amount of USDA beef would have cost us, and it's healthier. No guilt here!! :tongue3: And the neat thing is he only has to go out behind our house to get it!!!

Huh?! Has whoever said that looked into how that USDA certified meat is raised, what it's fed, how it is slaughtered?! The vast majority of meat available in stores comes from animals that are NOT treated with the care and stewardship we are taught about in scripture and so much of that meat is filled with nasty garbage.
By the way, I dislike all of your posts and you probably kill off bunnies with blow darts in your spare time and hang them on your evil, upside down Christmas idol tree. And you'll probably not even be home on Thanksgiving, you'll be out shooting innocent turkeys rather than buying a frozen Butterball like the pilgrims did. GRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!
Feeling better yet? -

My Christmas tree is not evil. It is plastic.
And I won't be turkey hunting on Thanksgiving Day. Turkey season ends this Friday just in time for deer season to open.
There, now I feel much better. Thanks, Gina! -

The purpose of this sort of web site is sell one's sacred cow. It is always the same cow. -
1. You KNOW you like our posts, Gina!! You're just telling yourself you don't but you really do!!!
2. Actually, a sawed off single barrel 20 gauge is better than blow darts---you don't haff ta use half the air!!!
3. There's a momma Turkey hanging out around here that walks around the place----120 acre cattle farm---with about 20 youinglings----free as birds can be free------however----last year I KNOW that I KNOW that I KNOW I saw a TOM strutting past the back window within 50 yards of the house----had a beard so long he was trippin' all over it while he was runnin'---------NOW----TOM Turkey is NOT free to roam as he pleases--there's a 12 gauge Magnum shotgun shell in my gun closet that has his # on it----and one day Tom's # will be up!!!! -
Whatever you do, please don't cut off the poor creature's head and hang it on the living room wall. Ugh!
I can't help but wonder how we humans would feel if the situations were reversed and Bambi had a room full of trophy people heads of our relatives. (shudder) Can you imagine? -
One turns to the other and says "Huntin's been good this year. Got me a big ol' buck, gonna feed us the rest of winter. How's you do?"
Other person says nothing, just jerks thumb at wall, other person looks to see a turkey head dangling off a plaque.
"Oh."
After an uncomfortable silence, they both reach for the pretzels.
BTW, I tried to get a hunter out here to get me a turkey last year, didn't happen. Had to put out a few extra bucks...er, dollars this year for a decent organic one and it won't be the same as fresh, but hopefully will still be better and healthier than the alternative.
Happy Hunting! I mean...Thanksgiving. -
I like to go hunting, too, but not with a gun unless I have to. I like looking for hairy men. The hard part is that as I get older, the hair isn't where I find it attractive. Who wants hairy ears?
-
I guess nobody does like hairy ears. They never crisp up in hot oil like smoother ones, makes for a lot of choking. -
Whenever I get invited to go hunting, I tell them I was only trained to shoot people, so I avoid the temptation. (I was trained for war in the military.)
Cheers,
Jim
