I always call in advance and I expect others to do so. If someone drops in unexpectedly I will invite them in and depending on what I've got planned I will explain, "It sure is good to see you. I haven't got much time since I was planning on cleaning out the gutters and mowing the lawn, but we can visit for a little while", or something like that.

ALWAYS call! Give someone at least 20 minutes to tidy if they wish! We have friends who love to just stop in unexpectedly and it drives me nuts!

If someone drops by and I am not busy - I more than glad to welcome them in for a visit.
I suppose my mindset is still in the early '70s when I was in Germany. You would never call someone to see if you could come over and visit. You see, no one had a telephone! -
Keep an extra leaf blower, chainsaw, or mower handy in case unexpected company stops by. A couple times of being put to work and they will learn to call ahead and listen careful for the sound of engines.
Seriously, I always call ahead, and I prefer to have the same treatment. If someone drops by I will invite them in and they can just live with the mess my house is in. If I am busy I hope they understand.
I will, however stop my to see family they are working in the shop. I can sit a watch. :) -
Depends on my friend. Call or just drop by.
