Wall Mart has never had a reputation for ethical business practices. They really are a bad outfit and people should stop buying there, even if it does cost a bit more elsewhere. The old boy who started the chain believed people's greed was the way to success and I guess he was right.

Easy to say...and I won't disagree that they need to change some practices.

But, it's easy to tell someone who is on a tight, single-income family budget that saves literally $30-45 per week at Wal-mart on food and necessities to shop elsewhere...but when money is tight, and the extra $120-180 per month can break the bank...then one does what is best for one's family.

It is just like liberals to blame someone besides who needs to be blamed...

IT IS NOT WALMART'S FAULT.

It is the fault of those that were there... that rushed the store.

(not saying anyone here is guilty of blaming walmart.. but it seems that Walmart is getting the blame in the media)

Everyone that trampled him, or passed him by, should be tried for manslaughter.

The Management of this store contributed to that employee's death by not giving proper training in crowd control. The employee went to assist a pregnant woman who had fallen. In doing so he saved her but lost his life. And yes those that did trample him should be prosecuted. As it stands, the employee that died, his family will not be compensated for their loss (According to Neal Bortz, who was a trial lawyer before he became a radio talk show host).

I think WM will change the way this is done next year. It won't be as popular, but giving a lottery ticket to the first say 500 customers at a certain time would limit the chaos a bit. That means that #500 is the same as #1 and there should not be a 'rush'.

Like all the silly laws we now have in our societies, organizations and governments have to become 'police' when people loose their self control/self government. Look at all the laws that have come along in the USA over the last 50 years? No one can be trusted to do the right thing anymore. And our stock market collapse is another bright example of things that will get regulated when people loose control.

Seein's how rock concerts kill more people in crowd rushes, than evil Wal-Mart, how about we ban them ? And how about that pilgrimage to Mecca ? Or a papal visit to a South American town ? Should we ban those as well ?

CTB hatin' on Wal-Mart.....didn't see that coming.......

How about we blame the people who trampled this young man, mob or not ?
Apparently we are supose to blame everyone but the guilty.

I do not see WalMart as guilty in the stampede that resulted in the tragic death of the employee. I read somewhere that the mob actually took the door down and then the stampede began. I do see this as a sign of the true god of most Americans, and that is materialism and greed. My guess is that WalMart will change their security measures to attempt to avoide such a tragedy in the future.

My earlier comment was on their unsavory business ethics, and the economic hardships they have emposed on many while selling foreign made products at low prices. They have done much to cause the loss of manufacturing jobs in America, and in keeping wages low in other countries that produce produces for them.

cute! trying to twist tinytim's words..... when you wish to label and call names.

WalMart bears some responsibility for not planning appropriate crowd control. The man was a new hire. He was over 6 feet tall, over 200 pounds.. not a whimp... but not exactly hefty either for his height. He had been asked to help cover the front in anticipation that he could be of assistance with the crowd if needed.... according to some reports of WM associates. I have never said that it is all WalMart's responsibility. Nor have I suggested that people stop shopping at WalMart.

The folks who broke through the door also bear responsibility: It doesn't mean that those who were in the front of the line had control over the push of the crowd behind them.... so each person bears responsibility for his own behavior.

The purchasing powers of major stores, of which WalMart is only one of many, is such that they know the items which people are most eager to buy at a bargain: When they specifically target the consumer with drastic cuts, published sales, and 'lost leaders' of such limited quantity that there is no hope for folks to avail themselves of the bargain if they are not the first few to make the purchase..... then they have encouraged a mob like 'me first' mentality ...... which honors those willing to fight for position against the meeker and more Christian behavior one would find in persons such as DonnA or myself or other members of this board..... who might be in line and trying to get an item, but not shoving others around.

Their lawyer said on the news this morning that the only one responsible was Walmart and the people that stampeded had no responsibility.

Lawyers always go for the deep pockets.

It's a tragedy borne of greed- not of Wal-Mart's behalf but of those who broke the doors down and those who failed to stop and render aid. They will at the very least have to live with their guilt and at the most face God almighty.

Let's say Walmart neglected to provide security... if it wasn't for the people's GREED, security would not have been an issue.

We had crowds at our Walmart here... but noone was trampled...

Saying it is Walmarts fault is like blaming Walmart because shoplifters steal things... after all if Walmart had enough security, no shoplifter would ever get by with it... then prices wouldn't be affected..

It is time we call Greed.... SIN.
It is time we call selfishness, and this "Me first" attitude ....SIN

As I understand the news, the man who was crushed to death was only working at the store,,,not store staff,,, and the door was smashed upon him. He wasn't opening the door. The crowd smashed the door in. Hardly the fault of Walmart.

Cheers,

Jim

Perhaps they could have called 911, and let them know of the situation, but I agree with Jim. A store should have no liability if the doors are being broken down.

That's just stupid. Totally stupid. I think both have responsibility.

I agree that it's the people's greed that drove it - but it was also Wal-Mart's sales practices that contribute to it. They advertise low bottom prices on items that they don't have any plans to stock enough to meet demand. That causes a mob scene in that people are rushing to purchase the item before someone else. Other stores will go out to the line and give tickets to those who are online first for the particular item (Circuit City does this) so that there is no need to rush the store.

Walmart failed to provide security and a safe environment for what turned out to be 2000 people waiting on line. That was a mistake on their part. Yes, the crowd is who did the stampeding but Walmart created the stampede atmosphere, IMO.

The man was an employee - a new hire to the store. He was the largest person there so the manager sent him to the door knowing that there would be a stampede. He figured the big guy, who had no security training, by the way, would have the best chance against the crowd. The people started rushing the door when they saw the employee come to unlock it - the accident happened when the store opened and not before. So it WAS partly the fault of Walmart IMO. Do you go ahead and just open the doors to 2000 people who were rushing the door? *I* certainly wouldn't! If he were not at the door to open it, even if they rushed the door and broke it down, this man would not have been caught in the crowd. His manager told him to open the door. He was crushed. It was partly Walmart's fault.
