Really I only update weekly, but to be safe I recommend updating daily if you have important data on your system. Its also important to always backup your data in some form, i.e. disks, second hard drive, etc. One story I"ll share is about a lady I was talking to over the phone the other day and how she said she had updated her Norton only two hours earlier and now her system was infected with a virus that she said "ate Norton". The problem was she wanted us to take responsibility for it as her isp. It struck me as so funny when people do that and I was offering the number to Norton and her computer manuf., but no we were supposed to take responsibility for her downloading and opening an attachment that was infected. Give me a break. I had a similar situation happen before and my supervisor at the time had suggested I ask the guy if he had a flat on the side of the road if he would expect the highway patrol to fix it. Then he got on the phone and asked the guy if he had a heart attack if he would go see a podiatrist. It was cracking me up. People just don't want to take responsibility for what they do on a computer and they want everything free of charge. Going back to the story about the lady, she said she ran a major recruiting firm in Florida and that she opens 50-100 attachments a day. Well there is someone who really needs to read up on internet security. I think she had a valid complaint against Norton though. That having been said, antivirus programs can't always catch the latest viruses that are out there and its up to the user to make sure that their important data is backed up.

I probably should have also included F-Prot which one top of the line antivirus product.
-
Below is the link for where you can download F-Prot which provides the best protection against viruses. Its cost is $25, but it is well worth it, if you have important info on your computer that you don't want to be infected by a virus.
F-Prot -
We use Norton, mostly because it's easier to update. You can set it to automatically update -- although there's a charge after a certain period.

It's really hard for me to understand why anyone would not use virus protection of some sort! On our first computer, we used McAfee and we were always getting viruses. When we bought this new one, we switched to Norton, it works much, much better. Really..really! So far not one virus! And it's been two years this summer since we bought this computer, I told hubby it's almost time to upgrade. Whoa...I got the look, I guess we can go one more year! :D

I use Norton and yes it is very easy to keep your virus definitions up to date. Any version of Norton after 2001 will check for an update anytime you logon to the net. After a year you have to pay to update your definitions, but it is a minimal fee. I have also found that I usually buy the new version anyway each year to get the improvments in technology that go along with it. Once you get an upgrade rebate it only costs between 10 and 20 bucks to buy the new version.

One thing I don't like about Norton is that it is a large program and some features may create problems and their tech support is expensive. Actually in terms of updating, most antivirus software today is relatively simple to update fortunately.
-
Got a note from my son (webmaster for a large magazine) to be SURE to update daily. Evidently a new virus is hitting this week and is especially damaging.
-
I've used Norton for several years now. Although I mostly use a Hewlett-Packard PC nowadays, I've been using Symantec products since the early Mac days so it was an easy decision for me as to which one to use.
I generally update my virus definitions weekly, and scan manually once a week. Auto scanning just seems too clunky for my preferences. Also, I usually upgrade to the new versions every 1 to 1-1/2 yrs. -
I use Norton AntiVirus 2003 and run a Live Update every time I log on.
-
I use AVG personal edition.
And one thing about the "how often do you update" question: It didn't include "I set my software to automatically update every night at ________" (which I have). -
I actually had the opportunity and (piracy) to try out Norton's and McAfee's and Panda's head on in the land of viruses and pirates
Panda - I can see why they're almost extinct ;)
Nortons - It is a far more effective tool in regards to cleaning, and drive management, and it tends to sit easier on one's machine then McAfee
McAfee - my program of choice - It has its disadvantages - if yer using a cheaper ripoff chipset - not only are you asking fer it - but you lack certain "pathways" that McAfee likes to inhabit - This tends to slow the boot time of your machine incredibly, but it doesn't affect the run-time performance significantly tho.
The reason and the only reason i use McAfee's is that a fully updated and properly configured McAfee in comparison to a fully updated and Properly configured Nortons - can identify a far greater number of viruses then Nortons usually in the hundreds - last time I checked it was 55K viruses on file in comparison to Nortons 51K
However Norton's other utilities that come with it almost make the up to 10% greater chance of being infected worth risking
No - I dont work for McAfee's
