THis is a shame that people make so much out of style that they would divide. Style has often become something that garners more loyalty than doctrine and divides more than doctrine.

Quoted for truth.

Ann here is the problem. It is not about the many OR the few! We have milk toast pastors who need to be pastoring in the spirit of John the Baptist instead of a spirit of timidity. The truth is that it should not matter if ALL the people in attendance do not like the message if it is biblical based and spoken in love.
Most pastors actually do what you suggested. If they can get a majority to feel good or desire a certain type of message they will give it. That attitude that they have is not of the Lord. They need to speak clearly about the issues. When was the last time we have heard a message condemning re-marriage after divorce? That is simply one example. The reason we do not hear such things is that many pastors have bowed to the times and the people instead of to the Lord.

Well, I HOPE I'd never hear a sermon on condemning remarriage after divorce because I do not see that as Biblically sound. However, I know most of the pastors I've been under have never decided to not preach a sermon because it might offend. I don't see the style of music fitting in that same category however. You need to go by the culture of the congregation (do country here in NY and you'll have a mutiny!) and of course have songs that do their job - glorify God and worship Him. But if the culture of the church is a certain way, why force a different style of music on them?

I can't stand bluegrass in the church I pastor.
I can't stand McKamey style Southern Gospel in the church I pastor.

What happens when the music leader has those styles in the service?
Do I complain? Do I walk out? Do I leave?

NO, I worship God and appreciate the styles!...

If I can endure bluegrass and southern gospel whining, I think others should be able to worship God through Praise and worship, and electric guitar solos (which sound so much better than a banjo!... :tongue3:)

I have always taught everyone I pastor, yes even when I was a youth pastor, to learn to appreciate ALL types of music.
Sounds like you DON'T appreciate bluegrass or Southern Gospel. And I would not expect you to sit and listen to it if it offends you.

I used to perform bluegrass style music in church. When I discovered that there were some folks in the church that didn't like it, so I ceased playing it immediately - in spite of the pastor's urging me to continue. I will not needlessly offend my brother with my music.

I can exercise any liberty before God that he allows and not sin, but any liberty I exercise which knowingly and unnecessarily offends my brother is a sin.

Re the 20-30 somethings in our town:

Most are at the fundamentalist KJVO traditional music church.

Some are at the traditional non fundy churches.

Only a few are at the rock concert/trendy preaching church.

I think they have tired of style and want substance.

Now, I for one do NOT think that has to be at the hyper fundy church. But given those choices, apparently they do.

Those to whom I have spoken about this tell me they don't want sermons "relevent" to their lives, or services that imitate their lives outside of church.

Rather, they want preaching that is all about Jesus, singing that is all about Jesus, and to be challenged to a DIFFERENT life than the non churchgoing crowd.

If you have a separate worship service, then you have separate worship and a divided church.

NO!
ONLY if it is done in anger, lack of love etc!

can still be a united church body in these things, as long as we approach it in the Spirit of the Lord...

IF the Church agrees that in order to keep unity in the body, can have seperate services in order to NOT split the Church!

isn't the local assembly actually ALL the different worship services any ways?

That's just it.. I don't like it, but I can appreciate it..
To watch a banjo player really play his or her instrument when they are talented is great!.. I don't like the sound of a banjo, but I can appreciate the talent it takes to play one.. and I know the source of that talent is God.

I would never quit going to a church because of the music style. But I know so many on both sides of the issue that has. And to me that is sad.

The determining factor for me is this question... "IS this where God wants me to be?" If it is, then my comfort level with the music is of no importance...

I just started pastoring a church in June, the church I pastored for the last 5 yrs was a country church and we had a mix of music. This church is a city church, and we have a mix of music.. and I appreciate that fact.

We just have to respect each other.

Your church is a split church that shares expenses and revenues. Face it.

Yes, you have to respect each other. Think about what that means. That's all.

Nope...

Every Sunday at worship, ALL members and attenders experience the same worship service, just different "style" each session depending on whose leading it!

Hey JD, maybe you're offending Jesusfan and others by judging and condemning his church with your assumptions, and perhaps you should put that away too, like you did your bluegrass, because it was offensive?

Not at all offended by JD, more like amused that IF a Church actually "dares" to allow the Baptist "freedom of diversity" can be accused having a Church split open like overipe tomatoe!

I under stand your reluctance in hearing about remarriage after divorce. Your in the majority in the church today and it is not just about that sin. That is why the church is in the trouble it is in as most want their ears tickled.

What have I assumed?

That it is not even possible to allow/have different musical/worship styles in Church without it spliting the Church apart?
I made no assumption, but merely have alluded to the plain fact that if people will not sit together in a service then they do not worship together. You have two local churches meeting in one building, using the same name, sharing expenses and revenues.

Then why did you say this: (post #25)

IF the Church agrees that in order to keep unity in the body, can have seperate services in order to NOT split the Church!

Our SBC church went from good traditional music to the beat-driven contemporary music. We have the beat-driven contemporoary music in all services. The younger people think it is good music and seem to enjoy it. Most of the older people just sit and watch.

A few of us come to church after the song service for the preaching only and then go to Bible study. We have learned to be content with this arrangement. Most older people who sit through the beat-driven contemporary music are not happy about it.
