The single worst charity in America (with 68% of all income going to administrative expenses) = American Tract Society. Topping the list of America’s worst charities, ATS received $2.3 million in contributions but spent $1.6 million dollars on its administrative expenses in 2007 a 100% rise over 2006. The American Tract Society, based in Texas, distributes religious literature to spread its message around the world. With a history of low ratings from Charity Navigator, the group’s administrative expenses have consistently outpaced the amount of donations coming in. While the group receives income from other sources than contributions (sales of Bibles, tracts, etc), donors to the American Tract Society may be surprised to know that the recipient is the most inefficient in the country at maximizing the impact of its donations.
In the Worst 20 were a mix of hospitals, audobon society, choirs, zoos, etc. But SIX evangelical Christian groups were in this list (I say to our shame)
1. American Tract Society
4. Union Gospel Mission
8. Vision New England
9. Changed Lives
11. Victorious Christian Living Intl
19. Gospel to the Unreached Millions

That's very sad. A Christian organization, especially one involved in world evangelism, should be completely transparent in their finances.
The mission board I'm with, Baptist World Mission, uses all funds given for missionaries for us, the missionaries. We do pay a small office fee, but that's us, not the churches. The directors (general, Asia, Africa, etc.) do not get salaries from the board, but raise their own support. -
It was interesting how Galilean Baptist Missions (later merged with FBHM = Bap Missions of NA) operated. 100% of funds raised by the missionary was retained by the missionary. The church which he pastored was to send 10% of its undesignated offerings to the GBM home office.

Our mission gives us 100% of what we raise.
I heard (and do not know personally) that one mission has 2/3 of its staff listed as administrative and 1/3 on the field. Seems to me it should at the very least be the other way around.
