Bob, what is a bohunk??

Bohemia was a sovereign nation for centuries but was gobbled up by other Eastern European countries.
Today it is part of the Czech Republic, along with Moravia. Strong Christian heritage - Moravians were first missionaries from Europe into the trans-Caucasus region.
Remember Good King Wenceslaus? He is from Bohemia (around 900 AD)
People from Bohemia were always a little bit "off" in their ways - dressed any way they felt like, lived a lackadaysical lifestyle. So the beatniks, hippies and generally off-the-wall types are often still refered to as "bohemian".
"Bohunk" is an endearing national term for someone that is truly Bohemian in ethnic persuasion (not just dressing funny). Like Ruski is for a Russian, Nip is for a Japanese (who call themselves Nippon), etc.
Ask a history teacher a question and you are sure to get more . . . -
