My God is not evil neither but he will give a just reward to every man according as his work my be. If you die in your sins where Christ is ye cannot come.

So what about it folk, should we be considering hell as a natural consequence or does the Bible teach that it is a punishment. Funny how I've never questioned that it was a punishment before...... -
Good point...

Mt 7:19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the FIRE. Mt 13:40 As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the FIRE; so shall it be in the end of this world. Mt 13:42 And shall cast them into a furnace of FIRE: there shall be wailing and nashing of teeth. Mt 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, DEPART from me, ye CURSED, into EVERLASTING FIRE, prepared for the devil and his angels.

Consider the Last Day of Judgment being:
"The end of God's appointing this day, is for the manifestation of the glory of his mercy, in the eternal salvation of the elect; and of his justice, in the eternal damnation of the reprobate, who are wicked and disobedient; for then shall the righteous go into everlasting life, and receive that fulness of joy and glory with everlasting rewards, in the presence of the Lord; but the wicked, who know not God, and obey not the gospel of Jesus Christ, shall be cast aside into everlasting torments, and punished with everlasting destruction, from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power."
"Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you; And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day." 2 Thess 1:6-10 -

Isa 13:11And I will punish the world for [their] evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.
Isa 26:21For, behold, the LORD cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.
Jer 36:31And I will punish him and his seed and his servants for their iniquity; and I will bring upon them, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and upon the men of Judah, all the evil that I have pronounced against them; but they hearkened not. -

Luke 16:
19: There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:
20: And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,
21: And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.
22: And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;
23: And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
24: And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
I would call that punishment. IMO
Ps 9:
16: The LORD is known by the judgment which he executeth: the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah.
17: The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.
You are not wrong Amy, for consequence for being condemned to hell is punishment. It would be hard to say one without the other. -
There is salvation in none other than Jesus Christ. If you don't have forgiveness for your sin, then the punishment for that sin is eternal separation from God in hell. -
No choice is still a choice

So hell then would be both a natural consequence (of making the wrong decision concerning Christ) and a punishment(for sins committed as a result of not obeying God)?
I can accept that. -
You see the point? -

Hell was created for the devil and his angels. This was created due to the fact unholiness cannot live with holiness, not as punishment per se. The natural consequence of man not putting their faith in Christ leads to hell as the natural consequence of being unrighteous. We may look at it as punishment, but I believe God sees it as a means to seperate His holiness with evil. It may be in our eyes we see it as punishment, but it's what we rightly deserve if we don't put our trust in Christ. God may see it as the natural consequence of a fallen world.
It's like if we drive through a "road closed ahead" sign...and drive off a cliff. We wouldn't say this was punishment, but a natural consequence of not obeying the sign. If you "obey the sign" you will live...if you don't, you won't.
