I was watching a program on the Military Channel

It was about the War Between the States. During the program it mentioned that most Southenrs did not own slaves but only fought because they (Whites) were poor & uneducated and influenced by rich politicans and wealthy land (& slave) owners

    Thoughts?

ps - sounds like we have heard that excuse at other times.

Most every war in the history of the world has been about money and personal power.

It was financially better for the cotton growers to sell to England than to New England. (read someplace that) The New England cotton mill owners tried to legislate the growers into selling to them thus Lincoln's War.

But almost no soldiers ever fought for either.

They fought for their homes and families, for their friends and neighbors. They fought for the right to determine their own destiney and their own lives.

Oh when the time comes to sign enlistment papers the politics of patriotism is great. The history and financial opportunity are used to sway recruits. You don't want this once in a lifetime opportunity to pass you by.

But when the time comes to fight, you fight for the man next to you and the family at home.

The biggest reason most Southerners fought was because Northern Armies invaded the south, period.

The real reason for the war was to end states rights. Ignorant christian men murdering other christian men, what a waste. I remember a wise man saying “stupid is as stupid does”.

That wasnt the question. The OP is "Why did they fight" was it beacuse they were poor and uneducated, or did (the majority) fight for a true cause?

Of course some did for other reasons, but I would say most fought for States or Commonwealth rights.

ps back to your answer - would you say the same about the so-called Civil War of 1776?

The civil war was propagated by the same satanic power to establish a new world order for the express purpose of conquering the earth at some future date. The worst part of it is that they have done all of this with the blood of "Christians" as the fall guy.

Why, then, has the US been fighting wars for the last 30 years? My neighbors don't live anywhere near Iran or Iraq.

So are you saying that the American Revolution of 1776 should not have happened?

That's correct. America was born out of rebellion.

England was born out of rebellion - think William the Conquerer. Just about every nation has had a rebellion.

This is why the South went to war. And we see a very similiar feeling among many states today in their declarations of their sovereignty. They do not wish to be taxed by the Federal Government that does not benefit their own states.

    I agree.

Sounds an awful lot like more victimization of poor, ignorant rednecks by elitest liberals.

If your going to label me anyway, which I don't like to start with, but if your going to do it anyway, I would a whole lot rather be an ignorant redneck than an elitist liberal.

Not that you are labeling anyone carpo, sounds like the History Channel was.

Hmm. Then why didn't the fire eaters mention such things when they drew up a list of causes for South Carolina's secession? Guess what they did mention ...

RSR....Carolina's declaration sort of dispells the idea that segregation and slavery had nothing to do with the Civil War, doesn't it!

Also, someone quoted "all men are created equal" was in the US Constitution....It was just one line in the president's speech!

    Cheers,

    Jim
