There are plenty of commentaries out there ,but which one(s) have helped you the most? Which is your favorite? I like H. A. Ironsides. I have been wanting to get some of Oliver B. Greene's and Harold B. Sightler's but I have not got around to buying them. There are plenty of others but these are my favorites.

The only complete commentary sets I have through the Bible by one person are Matthew Henry's and J. Vernon McGee's. I don't have, but can access John Gill online. Otherwise, I buy commentaries by the book according to which author I think would be profitable.
-
I have three main commentaries I rely on:
Kiel and Delitzsch on the Old Testament
An American Commentary on the New Testament, Edited by Alvah Hovey, Judson Press
The New International Commentary on the New Testament, edited by F.F. Bruce.
I still use The Interpreter's Bible (commentary on the whole Bible,,some modernistic, but good references)
Like Brother Robert, I also prefer to purchase individual books by given authors.
Brother Robert...McGee's commentary...is that from his through the bible series? I still listen to that on my local radio everyday.
Cheers,

Yes, Bro. Jim. I think it is the same as the individual book commentaries that are based on his Through the Bible series - this one is put into a five volume set.
-
The two that I always consult in sermon prep. are the New International Bible and Interpretation.

if you are looking for commentaries in the net, you can have some of the best from the e-sword website. i have downloaded it's commentaries myself, together with some other study notes. in there you can find, among other very lengthy commentaries are: Albert Barne's, Adam Clark, John Gill, Matthew Henry (both complete and concise), and Calvin's Institutes of Christian Religions.
All of those can be downloaded for free, and, being on electronic print, can be browsed easily with a click of the mouse. -

Definatley Halleys Bible Commentary, excellent value.

I didn't know Halley wrote a commentary. How many volumes? Did he just edit it and use different authors?
I am familiar with the Halley's Bible Handbook.

I like Matthew Henry;
Jamieson, Faussett, & Brown;
Oliver Green (now There is a BAPTIST for you!);
Bible Knowledge Commentary is a good 2 volume set;
Expositor's Bible Commentary.
One of my Dallas Seminary professors, Dr. Thomas Constable, has some of the best notes, which we used in lieu of a commentary, and were very popular. - They are available for a free download, (each book individually) at:
http://www.soniclight.com/ --Uses the free Acrobat reader
Or can be ordered from the seminary bookstore on CD-rom.
J. Vernon McGee's can be purchased in small paperbacks, (almost 100 total books, Genesis is divided into three or four books, etc.) or in the 5 volume hardback set, plus a new Index volume. Personally, I prefer the others above McGee. -
Hendriksen NT series
Matthew Poole's 3 vols on the Bible;
Calvin's Commentaries
John Gill's
NICOT
NICNT
Keil/Delisztch on OT
Then assorted ones by book: Word, New American, et.al. -
Of the individual book commentaries, I have found good ones in the Tyndale Series (originally published by Eerdman's, but I think now by Inter Varsity Press).
-
My personal favorite is the New Bible Commentary, revised by IVP in the mid 90's. Along with the New Bible Dictionary, I find these hard to beat for one volume publications.
-
Sorry Jim I got mixed up there.

I have a few comparatively good commentaries, some on the computer, others on the bookshelf, some in both formats. But I rarely look in them. Yet if I do I mostly look up in Gill's commentary. Others I more seldom use would be Matthew Poole's, J-F-B, Robertson's NT Word Pictures, Vincent's Word Studies NT. I think Gill is the best commentator on the whole.

Same here Dr. John Gills Exposition On The Whole Bible... So glad it is on line reading that small print can make a person go blind... Also his Body Of Divinity. Gill is the only commentary I own... Do I need another?... Brother Glen

One can never have too many commentaries. The interesting thing is this. I bought a number of commentaries to assist in understanding the tough passages, and it is amazing how many authors seem to flip over these passages.
On a numnber of these passages, I found answers in other books,,biographies and single message books, devotionals and theological texts.
I think if I had to rely on any one set of commentaries, it would be the New International, edited by F.F. Bruce......I would like to see the OT edition. I bought my original New Internationals for $75.00...I hate to think what they might cost to-day,,I was missing a few that were not published at the time and each book was around $40.00 each.
Cheers,
Jim -
I don't think I could limit myself to just one series; I'd want to pick and choose among the best of them (Word, Expositor's, NIC) and maybe pillage a few from the Pillar series and stuff.
But hey Tyndale, and New Century have afew really good selections too.
