I have found an evangelical thinker I agree with on most things, surprisingly to me: Albert Mohler.

Reading his works has given me a new perspective on R.C. Sproul and John MacArthur. I also have at least some evangelical thinkers I still highly respect more and more over time. They tend to be the “prophet of doom” types, but I believe wholeheartedly that that is just what is needed given the state of the Church in the West, which includes what I see as crises in evangelicalism.

That said, what do you guys and gals think of Albert Mohler?

So if what's a good Al Mohler book, article, video or whatever, that y'all would recommend as an "intro."

On the up side he is very intelligent and a solid Christian.

Otherwise he is a calvinist and is currently part of the crazies pushing "social justice" in the convention.

Very good thinker, as he would be articulating Calvinism for the SBC, and also he makes a clear distinction between what are essential doctrines, and what are secondary ones in the Church.

I have benefitted from reading some of Al Mohler's writings (I word it that way in that I have not read lots of Mohler, but can say I have benefitted from all that I have read.)

He would seem to be our version of Dr Sproul, a thinking person Calvinist!

I like most of what I've read by him, but my exposure has not been great.

    What?

Did you mean a thinking person's Calvinist? Or did you mean a thinking Calvinist? Or : a Baptist-thinking Calvinist?

Your posts have to be translated.

He is a Calvinist who discusses deeper spiritual matters. the Baptist equivalent of what Dr Sproul did for Reformed in articulating the faith.

Hilarious 1984 ad in the Louisville Courier-Journal with Mohler declaring he disapproved of the SBC resolution "On Ordination And The Role Of Women In Ministry":
The resolution passed by the SBC had stated that "Paul...excludes women from pastoral leadership (1 Tim. 2:12) to preserve a submission God requires because the man was first in creation and the woman was first in the Edenic fall (1 Tim. 2:13ff)," and declared "pastoral functions and leadership roles entailing ordination" off limits to women.

Why do you find a reasoned defense of the autonomy of the local church to be "hilarious?"

That article rings as one solid criticism of a man I have grown to respect. As far as I can perceive at this time, Mohler is not like Pulpit and Pen or other online ministries like Pirate Christian that will broadside any false teaching they perceive, no matter the source. His current lack of attacks on those he associates with seems somewhat noble in respect to places like Pulpit and Pen, because they generally lack gentleness with their criticisms.

However, given the biblical examples of John the Baptist, Jesus, and Paul, and given his keen ability to elucidate what is going on at many levels, hopefully he will move towards gentle criticism of those leaders and churches in the SBC he finds at odds with his reading of the bible. We stand to learn from iron sharpening iron.
