Haven't looked through the RMC data yet; but the first obvious (to me) missing data is the overtime pay for civilian equivalent. There seems to be a basic assumption here that military jobs are "9-5" equivalents to civilian counterparts. That's not true, and necessarily lends to a skewed pay comparison.

Everywhere I've ever worked, salaried employees were always expected to work more than 40 per week. My sister works 60 to 70 hours per week, EVERY WEEK, as a department manager at a grocery store. And she gets no 20-year pension, a way less salary than the average military officer.

Coorperate executives sit in their office for about an hour, then have a meeting for 2 hours, and spend the rest of the day at social gatherings or on the golf course. Which is what senior military officers do.

Considering my brother has been in the Navy for 23 years, has been moved at least 10 times, has been deployed numerous times into hostile territory and is right now sitting in the hottest spot (danger-wise) of Afghanistan, I'd say he deserves every penny he gets paid.

You want to compare a grocery store department manger to a military officer?

And every penny he gets came from a worker that added value to the economy. Military is overhead - an expense.

And it's not a matter of whether anyone "deserves" what they get. Do you deserve what you get? By saying that a Seaman deserves every penny he gets, are you implying that non-Seaman do not deserve what they get? Not trying to be a smart alec, just trying to get you to see the logical absurdity of your statement.

Is two attempts on her life by homeless human parasites attempting to steal something they feel they deserve enough hazard for you? Can she be proud now, or should she go ahead and join the military if she wants her life to count for something?

Shame on me. You know, like what W tried to say, fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. Well, shame on me, because I've been fooled more than twice by coming on this board and trying to have a rational conversation. I've never been so insulted as to have my dear sister who is working herself to death to provide for her family and pay taxes so parasites can live to be mocked and ridiculed simply because her brother has the stupidity to bring up an honest issue concerning whether the military has been overly agrandized in our society. Well, the answer to that is apparent.

J.D., I couldn't agree more that the military has been overly agrandized in our society, and it certainly is not the only time in history this has occurred. Just as during the times of the Crusades, the affairs of the 'Middle East' are driving it. Seems Ike tried to warn us about the dangers of a perpetual war economy, and here we are living it.

You are aware that military pay taxes, too? In essence, paying a portion of their own paychecks?

I'll go through the RMC data later today. As someone else on this board is fond of saying lately, let's make sure we're comparing apples to apples. Is a grocery store manager comparable to a military officer? Or a brigade first sergeant? General officers are typically on par with CEOs; O-1s through O-3s/O-4s with middle management. Just gotta check and see if the RMC data makes the same comparisons, or lumps all military officers into one category, etc. And let us not forget our DoD civilians, ranging from GS-03 to GS-15, and the SES corps.

As for your sister - she has my utmost respect. As I stated in another thread, it's people like her--and you--that ensure our military members have a "normal" environment to come back to, and it's greatly appreciated.

[SIZE=+0]J.D. there is no question that men and women in the military who are in combat deserve very high pay. However the bottom line is that no nation can afford such and if wisdom is used they rely on honor and dedication to the nation as they sacrifice themselves for the country for the time they are in the arena of combat instead of higher pay.

[SIZE=+0]One of the reasons we are in the debt crises right now is that we have lost sight of this and not just in the military but all facets of government. In Houston Texas the base salary of Houston independent school superintendent is reported as $300,000 in addition to $19,200 for communications and travel expenses and for earning a score of satisfactory on his job evaluation, he was qualified to receive a bonus of $37,500 along with another bonus which he received 60,000 extra for that last year.

There is no question this is all out of control. As a nation we have lost our way and the only way it is going to be fixed is when this run away train is run over the cliff. The problem is that when that happens, and it will, we all go over with it. By the way it is all because of greed in the people and foolish political leaders. So are those in the military being over paid for what is asked of them? No, as in one sense no amount is too much for freedom, but the truth yes as no nation can afford it and it has to end, from a practical standpoint, and it will but it will not be pretty when it does. All these men and women who have given their their bodies and lives will all be in vain when this hits as freedom is of little value if it cannot be enjoyed because of nation wide economic collapse and sadly that is exactly where we are headed.

So you saying, "Oh, sorry, I shouldn't have compare a person that works with a person that doesn't work." is an example of a "rational conversation"?

You were the one that brought your sister into this - no one else.

There is one thing you won't get here. A sympathetic audience and a minimal Christian attitude. This site proves the old adage I heard in Church that we shoot our wounded.

What you will get is a boatload of judgmental attitude.

    Lunacy at it's best!

Why should they get paid more. They volunteered and they knew what the pay was?
