I agree with just about everything in that article. However, the 1996 NLT is put under the category of a paraphrase. A paraphrase in the sense of not being a true translation. (There are various meanings attached to the word paraphrase. In a sense all translations paraphrase the original languages).

It seems to be a recent article. I was wondering why the 2007 NLT was not referenced.

    "Which Bible Version Is Best?"

I prefer the one with no copy right to the words of God.

Then which version are you talking about - keep in mind that in the United Kingdom, the King James Version IS under royal copyright!!!!

Ah, yes, The American Standard Version of 1901. Good choice!

The website appears to have no Baptist or evangelical credentials.
You will see that his wife, the life-long Roman Catholic, is his assistant.

Mad Dog, the "copyrights" issue is just some KJVO bunk. Personally, I'm GLAD to have copyrighted Bibles, as I know I have GENUINE copies, unaltered by any publisher or editor. Those copies include a Cambridge KJV.

Remember, Mad Dog, uncopyrighted Bibles mighta been printed by "Flybynight Clearing House" or some cult, and may not be God's word at all. You have no assurance of what you're getting!

Interesting point - never thought about that before~!
Just looked at one of my KJV-
    There are two copyrights:

    THE
    Holy Bible
    containing
    The Old and New Testaments
Translated out of the original tongues
    and with the former translations
    diligently compared and revised
    BY HIS MAJESTY'S SPECIAL COMMAND
Appointed to be read in Churches

    Authorized
    King James Version

    Then on the next page:

Concordance and end of verse references edited by Russell L. Surls
Copyright © 1986 by World Bible Publishers, Inc

Robycop3, have you seen any spurious Bibles printed by fly-by-night publishers? How would you describe them.

Salty, where was the first copyright?

    Thanks.

BibleGateway.com says of the ASV-1901, "This Bible is in the public domain in the United States." That seems to imply it might be under copyright elsewhere (which seems odd). Anyone know??

I can't speak for Robycop3, but I saw mentioned these before:
    https://www.dollartree.com/Holy-Bib...th-Black-Leatherette-Covers/p343436/index.pro

And while I wouldn't expect them to purposefully alter things, I have to wonder how much editorial oversight you get from that price point, and from China.

I think mainly with these you'll tend to get cheap paper, cheap binding and cheap covers, but not likely to get an altered Bible, it would seem. If their goal is to produce a Bible as cheaply as possible (and make money) it's not likely they'll do any altering which would take retypesetting, etc. I suppose most of the pages are photographically reproduced some way or another, though I'm not sure.

Theoretically a false group or cult could produce an altered Bible that was not identified/labeled as such, but I'm not aware of any cases of that happening.

Probably just a legal weaseling, since it might be possible that it's under copyright for some reason somewhere, like Micronesia.

More likely it's that the United States was the only place it was ever copyrighted; the English Revised Version, upon which the ASV was based, was not copyrighted in the United States, for example.

There are any number of "KJV" Bibles on the market of unknown provenance. American publishers, in particular, have churned out translations of all stripes which may or may not agree with the Oxford/Cambridge editions.

Thanks for the explanation, Salty. You do understand, though, that for a Bible published in the U.S.A. that is only an historical reference with no legal status? The only part that could cause one to run afoul with the copyright law is misuse of the material that was copyrighted in the U.S. in 1986.

Probably so. I can't imagine that it would have been copyrighted anywhere else. So I guess they are letting everyone know that they have the right to publish it and if you live somewhere else it's up to you to figure out whether you have the legal right to do so.

I assume you mean, though, Bibles with various differences that exist in spelling, punctuation and so forth, and not some "vast cult-wing conspiracy" designed to inculcate heretical doctrines among patrons, as robycop alluded to?
