    starts tomorrow!

Reformed Baptist theologian Timothy George urges a focus on social sins:

Social Sins in Lent by Timothy George

"Most often, the penitential disciplines of Lent focus on personal sins of greed and indulgence, with an emphasis on abstaining from some private luxuries and exercising a certain moderation in how we eat and drink."

Jesus' "focus was on something else...social sins...inhospitality, insularity, and inhumanity."

"Prejudice literally means to judge in advance. It means not to deal with a person as a person, but to put on that person all kinds of labels....How quickly prejudice can erupt into violence....Where does fighting and violence come from?....It comes from inside your heart. It comes from not being right with God (James 4:1-3)."

"If we are going to follow Jesus on his way to the cross, then the devotion we have for him must be reflected in our attitude toward others—all the others."

Nathan Finn, who like Timothy George, is a Fellow of the Center for Baptist Renewal and signer of the Reforming Catholic Confession, has some practical recommendations:

Lenten Spiritual Disciplines - Nathan Finn

"I’m a convictionally reformational Baptist....beginning tomorrow, I will be observing the Lenten season for the next forty days, as I have done virtually every year for the past dozen years."

"If you’re interested in giving Lent a whirl, consider practicing some of the following spiritual disciplines during this season:...fast through breakfast and lunch...extra time in prayer and Scripture meditation....extra meditation on the gospel...partial media fast like giving up television or internet....Memorize one of the passion accounts....extra time reading through a devotional book."

Lent is nothing but a scheme to get people to submit to the demonic forces behind the evil men of the Catholic Church.

Jesus warned us not to submit to hypocrites, and Paul explains why in 1 Timothy 4:1-5.

Hypocritical spiritual leaders, like the people within the Catholic church, will have seducing spirits circling their "ministerial" efforts. Those seducing spirits will guide the hypocrites in pushing demonic doctrines such as corporate fasts that draw their followers to a very deep, cultic level of submission. The purpose of those demonic doctrines is to lead people away from the faith. They basically get people to replace God on the throne with wicked men as spiritual overlords.

This thread should be deleted, as it there is nothing "Baptist" about it. It is cultic, catholic dogma that should be rejected out of hand.

Finding neither biblical command nor biblical precedent, and considering its close affiliation with Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy -- I think I'll pass.

Besides, I forgot to eat all I could on Fat Tuesday!

I didn't realize that hypocrites were found only (or even especially) within the Catholic Church.

I don't observe Lent, but I don't fuss with those who do. Just like I don't fuss with Baptists who treat Easter or Christmas as special days, with no biblical command or precedent.

One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. The one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God, while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God.

You are not the arbiter of what is "Baptist" or Christian.

Lent is a type of communal fasting. Fasting is explicitly taught and practiced by Jesus. Just because certain groups we disagree with have been more historically systematic about it doesn't mean that we should not make use of the value of the practice.

It would be like condemning prayer because Roman Catholics, Mormons, JWs, Word of Faith charismatics, and Methodists do it.

Christmas and Easter commemorate doctrinally crucial events well documented in scripture. Lent is related to the latter, and both fasting and 40 (days, years) as a time of testing are also scriptural. However, the combining them as "lent" seems more a human tradition. I think #4 said it right; lent's close association with Roman Catholicism should caution Baptists from making a big thing of it, while allowing Christian liberty.

Amen! There is no scriptural warrant for Lent. It is a papist invention.

Lent is, in fact, a manipulative, cultic scheme to get someone to deeply submit to a hypocritical leader. It's how you control masses of people, and it's why the cult of Catholicism uses it. The Vatican is expert in witchcraft mind control.

Why do they do this? Because they know it will unleash seducing spirits to blind the follower and lead them away form faith in Christ into gross error.

Paul warns about hypocrites like the Catholic church in 1 Timothy 4:1-5. I just can't believe the moderators of this forum are allowing this nonsense to be spread here.

    This thread should be deleted.

And the last time I heard someone suggest participating in Lent it was a Catholic wolf who weaseled his way into a protestant men's group. The perversion and subversion isn't even subtle nowadays. I suppose time is that short...

Next stop? The mother of all harlots gets judged!
