it is no longer a sin to be fat. It is now an official "illness".
Check it out here
Pedophilia has already been diagnosed as a psychological issue according to the nation's largest psych group.
Here are some more things that will be deemed illnesses in the not to distant future that will help my job as a preacher:
1. Murder (over controlling)
2. Serial rapist (sex addict)
3. Theft (deprived as a child)
4. Prostitution (paid sex addict)
5. Drug pusher (pharmicist - snicker snicker)

it never was a sin to be fat.
it's a sin to break the holy sabbath, worry about breaking that one. -
Correct. It is the unrighteously judgemental person who presumes that everyone who's overweight is guilty of gluttony. There are numberous factors that contribute to obesity: physiology, genetics, etc.
-
If overeating is now a disease then perhaps that is why I feel sick after eating too much at thanksgiving :/
Though I tend to disagree on overeating not being sin. Though in our eyes breaking any of the ten commandments is a giant no no God designed us to live healthy. A great deal of the Old Testament Law was concerning nutrition. Modern science today has well proven that food that are forbidden in the Bible (ie shrimp & pork) can cause various diseases such as cancer.
God intended for us to live right and though he no longer holds it against us what we eat (according to Peter's vision in Acts and several quotes from Christ) I believe that living healthy is God's desire for us. -
I overeat, but only on Saturday. On my way to hell in a handbasket.
Another ridiculous government decision . . . -
ay? "A break for fat people..." whadda you want me to break? ;)

</font>[/QUOTE]I hope i don't sound unkind but no one ever got obese by not eating too much. excessive intake of food is still the cause of obeseity, no? -
There is nothing in the Bible to indicate that being fat is a sin. Gluttony is a sin, but thin people can be gluttonous and not all fat people are. It's the act of loving/eating food to the point of gluttony that is a sin.

I suppose laziness is a sin. Maybe Johnv will tell us that that is also a medical issue.
-
I have never seen anyone who did not have enough to eat ever be fat.
-
Would you also quote the scientific reference that states that shrimp causes cancer? -
If I got an extra dime each time I saw a fat patient asking why he/she cannot lose weight I'd be rich! We know that there is genetic linkage to obesity - but I think it's probably a bit overblown practically. Most people exercise way too little AND don't realize just how many calories they eat!!

Some foods were forbidden to the Israelites only in the OT (but the text does not tell us why, except that God called them "unclean"). In Acts 10.9-16, Peter is told by God that all food is clean and can be eaten. This was right before Peter went to a Gentile home (Cornelius), and he had to be able to eat their food.
But it is also clear from other scripture that we are not under the OT dietary laws. However, those who are constrained from eating something because it seems unwise or unhealthy to them are free to do so, but they should not require that others behave the same way. This passage is in reference mostly to meat offered to idols, but the principles can be applied today.

Has anyone read "None of These Diseases" which discusses the physical reasons why the OT dietary laws were good for the Jews of that day?
Very interesting.

Charles, I agree with you that lots of people could lose weight if they would just exercise, but the fact is genetics causes many people to gain weight in their mid life even when they don't increase their food intake. My younger sister, who is 55, is tall and thin, 120 lbs. She looks like my father. I am 57, 3 inches shorter and quite a few pounds heavier and I look like my mother who was very skinny when she was young but gained a lot in her middle age. My "little sister"
eats a lot more than I do but never gains a pound. I, on the other hand, can gain weight just by walking by it. We both have sedentery jobs, but she has a lot of nervous energy. I work 6 to 7 days a week and rarely have any time to exercise. I am at work at 6 a.m. and rarely get home before 6 p.m. I'm usually much to tire to try any physical activity. I also have some medical problems that restrict my ability to walk any distance or use exercise machines.
What I'm saying is: food is not always the cause of someone gaining weight. Genetics and age get together sometimes to gang up on some of us (especially women).
I went on Weight Watchers once where you have to keep up with what you eat all day. When I went to weigh in, the woman looked at my list and said the reason I had not lost any weight was because I was not eating enough. I told her I was eating all I could. Go figure. -
I have lost 23 pounds in 4 months by counting calories. The maintenance (neither gain nor lose) daily calory count for my target weight is just under 2000 calories for my height, age and activity.
Consuming no more than 1800-1900 calories per day will bring me to my desired weight in about a year.
Adding large portions of fibrous vegetables to my diet along with replacing candy and ice cream with fruit has made it nearly painless.
Ranier cherries are in season here in Washington, 3 calories per cherry!
Alas, I am addicted to them and will need help when they go out of season soon.
I relax the diet a bit on the weekends but not a glut.

Laziness in excess is a sin. It's called sloth in the Bible.

In a little over 1 year of marriage, I have gained a good 10-15 pounds, bringing my tally up to a whopping 145. I only pray I can keep up that trend, for:
Psa 92:12 The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Those that be planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing; To shew that the LORD [is] upright: [he is] my rock, and [there is] no unrighteousness in him.
Neh 8:10 Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for [this] day [is] holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.
Pro 11:25 The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.
Most keenly is Prov 13:4: "The soul of the sluggard desireth, and [hath] nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat."
Fatness with sloth is sin--with diligence and work is sweetness and blessing.
