Likewise deacons must be reverent, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for money, 9 holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience.
If the correct interpretation is grape juice, this makes no sense.
A deacon shouldn't drink too much grape juice???
If the corrcet interpretation is wine, then you've got a problem with the word "much".
It is not italicized so it was not added later.
(is this correct?)
Therefore, it has to mean that a deacon should not drink very much wine.
It does not say he has to abstain.
Well, common sense says that too much of most anything is not good for you.
However, that interpretation makes zero sense in the context of this scripture.
The water in those days was worse than drinking juice.
Why didn't Paul say "not given to much water"?
See, that view does not make a lick of sense.
Tangent alert:
Prilosec and that whole class of drugs is really bad for your stomach.
These drugs are anti-histamines, and they tell your stomach to stop producing acid.
When you change your stomach chemistry this way, you end up killing off most of the beneficial flora, and you create an environment that encourages really BAD stuff to grow.
Another annoying but less dangerous side-effect is that you actually make your stomach more sensitive to acid, because after a while on these drugs your stomach basically says, "Hey, not much acid anymore, I guess we don't need to reinforce the lining as much..."
So when you get a little acid from histamine rebound, it feels like much more intense heartburn.
No it wasn't.
That was your opinion.
Scripture says MUCH and WINE. If the word wine was used instead of grape juice, then all the translators of ALL time made a really big goof, including the translators of the KJV.
Wine is wine and juice is juice.
"We think you'd make a great Deacon, but we're a little concerned about how much Welch's grape juice you drink.
We rummaged through your garbage and found two empty bottles this week, alone.
Now, if your whole family is drinking it, that's something else, but..."
Worse, if you believe Jesus associated with people who drink much grape juice, I can't imagine how you could be saved, since that's not the real Jesus.
