My church that I attend is a SBC church, but it seems like it is becoming more "independant".
Is there a trend going on in your church?
Baptist but what?

Saggy, I think that's a trend going on in many churches. Denominationalism, as the old SBC knew it, is on the wane.

I am a member of a local chuch near my
house. That church is a member of the
Union Baptist Association (UBA).
That church is a member of the
General Baptist Convention of Oklahoma (GBCO).
That church is a member of the
Southern Baptist Convention (SBC).
The UBA is a member of the GBCO.
The UBA is a member of the SBC.
The GBCO is a member of the SBC.
That is the technicalities.
I am NOT a member of the SBC.
I am a member of Alameda Baptist Church
(ABC, formerly Alameda Street Baptist
Church).
I will still be a member of ABC if
they join the Conservative Baptist Fellowship.
I will still be a member of ABC if
they join the Texas Baptist Cooperative.
I won't be a member of ABC if they
catch me posting like this -
Ed - You said it, bro!
But must clarify a fact. IF you are a member of a church and that church is a member of a parent organization, then you are de facto a part of that parent organization.
So if you are a member of a church that is SBC, then YOU are SBC. You may not like it or agree with it, but you ARE SBC.
Hence I am preaching at a church that is non-baptist. I will not join it. This way I am linked unofficially with a local church, but in no way linked to a denomination since I am not a member. -
Interesting topic, Saggy.
To me it seems like alot of SBC churches are choosing not to do everything the convention demands of them(Sunday school curriculum, supporting missionaries, etc). -
The convention "demanding"? Like when would we have to do what the convention "demanded"? Like when could they realistically demand anything?
-
You go, girl.

ditto the above :D

I am still Southern Baptist and have no major problem with being such. Have had some problems with some of the leadership, but that doesn't change the fact that I am still Southern Baptist.
Joseph Botwinick -
I am SBC, have no major problem being such, and support their missions with fervency, but by golly, GET BACK on those "demands."
We use Life Way, but we use other things.
We support IMB and NAMB missions, but we also do missions ourselves. -
Saggy, I hope what I'm about to say clarifies the point I'm trying to make:
I feel that there are churches in the SBC who will use nothing but Lifeway materials, support no missionaries other than those under the NAMB and IMB, expect those answering God's call to ministry to attend only SBC seminaries, and feel that their affiliation with the SBC is more important than their affiliation with the state convention and association. -
Well, we've stayed independent, fundamental from the start, and we just seem to stay that way.Our church is more like family, and that's the best thing about it. My real family may not be close, but I get to see a whole church of people who have become my family at least three times a week or more.
Praise the Lord for my church, and I know most of you feel the same about ya'lls churches.

Wow, i'm way up north in snowy (well, right now) Vermont.
I am a member of Wallingford Baptist Church.
Are church is old. 225 years, constantly running.
We are not part of any parent organization that I know of.
We decide what curriculums to use and what missionaries to support. -

Saggy,
The "demand" comes from ties which the convention has over the local church. Some churches borrowed money from the convention when started and so the convention owned the property.
The church I was saved in lost a big court fight and lost their property to the convention. They had to go out and start over. Today that church is running in the hundreds with a large facility, Christian school and the convention church is about the same as it was in 1960 when the court fight was on. ;) That is one way the "demand" comes. -
Hmmm.. That is interesting, Circuitrider.
Guess I have never been in a church that borrowed from the convention.
Don't think I could recommend they do, either. Usually, I have found that lending agencies are a lot more friendly than the convention is on money. -
Proverbs 22:7 The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.

i think what seperates sbc from the independant baptist is:
1. communion
2. calvinism
3. church independance
4. church doctrine
5. curch direction
6. church dicipline
now some belive different than others but i believe that these are the main points. -
2. calvinism - Um, who is more calvinistic?
3. church independance - I would agree, but neither would abandon Autonomy of the Local Church
4. church doctrine - Core doctrine? In what way?
5. church direction - What do you mean?
6. church dicipline - Because the Pastor "rules"?
This sounds like a very interesting comparison, but I fail to grasp all that you seem to see.

Circuitrider:
You brought out a very good point. This is just not happening in the SBC, but other kinds of churches as well. We are independent, with no convention, conference or anything. It is hard to get people to see this so they stay in the conferences not realizing they don't own their properties. How can we get churches to open their eyes to this?
