Been watching the "Hair" covering and now the "Swimwear" covering threads. Thought I would ask the next obvious question.
How much of the female AND male body should be "uncovered" in general in public. At church, Walmart, et al.
If "top of head" is spiritual, does that include ears, nape of neck? If "legs" is spiritual, does that include toes (sandals), akles, etc?
Where is the "spiritual" or "godly" line drawn. I DO NOT WANT WOMEN/MEN TO SIN, SO PLEASE BE SPECIFIC.
Since this is only cultural and there are no biblical diagrams (altho some OT Law might have affected the Jews), no scripture is needed. Just want your opinions.
Tanks.

Wow, you are really making me think on this one.
I will most prolly be in a minority here, but...here goes, Just my *opinions*.
I agree that we should not cause another to sin, but *to me* the issue gets clouded when we are also taking into account fetishes. It brings to my mind the question, where does my modesty end, and the viewers sick mind begin?
So with that preface, I see nothing unspiritual or unGodly with bare feet, toes, neck, knees, ear, ankles, and arms for women or men, in church or Wal-Mart.
Dina, watching this as I am really curious to see the other replies. -
Well, for myself, I don't like to wear sleeveless, so I wear short sleeve most of the time. Now there are times in the summer when I get over heated and wear sleeveless, or roll my sleeves over my shoulder, but I also have a skin condition to where in certain areas I do not sweat and get overheated easily there, my arms are one of those places.
I never wear form fitting clothing, my pants are loose, and in summer I don't wear pants at all again the over heating thing, although I do wear shorts in the summer, they and the skirt have to be knee length or longer, and again never form fitting, and they have to be loose. Most of my clothing are a size larger to make sure they are lose enough.
I also see no problem with bare feet or sandals. In their right place.
Unmodest dress would be if my skirt was too short or tight, my blouses and tee shirts cut low or too tight, shorts are short and tight, tight pants. -
Modesty is the key. We can't really say this about what amount of skin. In Victorian days ankles were considered sensual.
Modesty does not draw attention to oneself in any area.
After hearing a Muslim woman interviewed on the radio I can actually see their point on the wearing of the burka and head covering. May not agree, but can see their point. -
I wear sleeveless shirts in the heat of summer and shorts that come above my knee. I don't wear the shirts that have spaghetti straps or are low cut. I would to sleep in tho. I wear clothes that fit well, nothing too baggy.

No middriffs, especially fat ones should
be seen in these cases. If you do show your
tummy, then you aught to wear
sun glasses that hide your identity
(you can buy sun glasses right there,
go to aisle 17). -

We have been trying to figure out why obese and thin women alike have the need to show their belly and backside. Frankly it is sickening to see this. :( -
No big bellies stuck out over the belt line with huge flashy belt buckles.
No varicose veins, please.
No stretch marks, either.
None of the above are godly. -
As long as I'm overweight, anything that shows anything but the hands, feet, and face shouldn't be worn by anyone else. It makes me realize what chocolate does to me, and that's NOT a thought I want before Chocolate..I mean, Valentine's day!

I asked a mom at our swim class if she was going to go in with her daughter during our open swim times next week. She said 'If you can help me lose 60 lbs by next week.' I told her I'd be glad to..... If she'd help me lose 20 years!!

Wellllllllll, I don't know!!! Wait a minute and let me go ask Daisy Duke!!!! :D
For men, though--if your legs don't mimic the legs of a football linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers---don't wear shorts!!!

Can I add that men should be required to remove their back hair? I was in the gym the other day getting ready for work, and I though I saw a warewolf in the steam room! It scared me to death until it said "hello" to me.
Seriously, though, the problem with "legislating" modesty is that it's contingent on the culture, locals, and customs. For example, if I'm working in my front yard breaking up my driveway with a sledgehammer, a tank-tee and a pair of shorts will suffice. That same outfit to, say, the local high school play, would be inappropriate. Likewise, jeans and a tee shirt that reads "Jedi Training Academy" is fine for the mall, but not for church. Going shirtless is fine for the beach or lake, but not for going to the grocery store. My daughter would no wear a tank top and shorts to the local Starbucks, but if she were on a hike in the Badlands of Montana, it might be a matter of necessity. Frankly, I'm less concerned about my daughter wearing a bikini to the pool than I am with my 300lb neighbor Sven and his speedo. My daughter shows much less flesh than him. -

Johnv!!!!
How do you KNOW Sevo weighs 300 lbs????? I mean, my father-in-law can look at a yearling calf and "tell" how much it weighs---give or take ten pounds or so---
Now!!! Back to Daisy Duke!!! :D

This is ironic cos they wore dresses that shoved out the buttocks and almost deposited their breasts in your lap.
What a chimera is man; what a contradiction
I wear short trousers in summer and people call me knobby when they see my thin, white legs. They have nothing to do with modesty. You don't have to gander at my legs. I have eyes, you know!

Seriously BACK ON TOPIC
At our college where I was Dean (International Institute in suburban Dallas) the President's wife established that girls had to wear long-sleeved blouses.
Why? Some with the sleeveless look were showing underwear and lots of flesh.
Then blouses had to be pull over or button up the back.
Why? Some had "gap-osis" with the button up front showing cleavage, underwear and more.
She dictated no sandals or open-toed shoes.
Why? Some men were turned on by feet.
Of course, coulottes and hose at all time. No slacks.
No long necklaces, since pendant type hung between the breasts and accentuated them.
We went there willing to "tolerate" such legalism. We left 5 years later thrilled with grace. -
Ok then, for a back to the topic serious answer.
I have no problem with my daughter's wearing pants, dresses, skirts, sleeveless shirts, or even shorts at this point in time.
This will change as they mature.
For women, no shorts, no short skirts, pants are ok especially in winter or when working but it's nice to wear "girl clothes" and look as feminine as possible. Also modest, which would mean no low rider jeans, no tight jeans or skirts or dresses, no sleeveless shirts, no half shirts, no tight shirts.
For men, no shorts, no sleeveless shirts, no tight clothing.
And for all teens, those pants worn down so low to show off your boxers look idiotic! Get you some suspenders if your pants are too loose to cover your rump!
The issue of dress is one thing I hated the legalism of in my old church, but in my new one the non-standards are my issue! Guess I'm hard to please!

But at church—that is a whole different scenario—especially if the individual is in the pulpit or on the platform in front of the assembly where it would be rude for me to look the other way. I believe that anyone in the pulpit should be fully clothed, that is, wearing full length pants and long sleeves (and I don’t believe that women should wear pants to church). And I believe that it is best for men and boys standing in front of the congregation to be fully clothed, that is, wearing full length pants and long sleeves. And I believe that it is best for women and girls standing in front of the congregation to be fully clothed, that is, wearing full length dresses and long sleeves. I also believe that all women and girls should have their heads covered while inside the church building or meeting place as was the practice of the Church for the most part until the 1950’s.
I fully realize that in many parts of the world customs are very different and that a lack of body coverings is not seen as offensive to anyone. Under these circumstances, clothing that would be most appropriate in Western Culture may not be at all appropriate. However, in keeping with Scripture, I believe that all women and girls should have their heads covered while attending church services regardless of local customs.
