Good Morning all! Thought I'd check in early so Jim won't FREAK OUT! LOL

Our son and his wife and our precious baby Jack will land in 20 mins. They're renting a car since the parents will be driving into Atlanta for a 4 night/ day church seminar and leaving Jack with us. Lots to do!

It's to hit 82° here today and I'm dreading the heat! I like it cool and crisp.

Happy Birthday to your dear beloved hubby! Did you say 60 today, Sheila? Finally approaching middle age, is he? LOL

Hope everyone has a Blessed Day in Jesus! God is GOOD!

Jim, today is Columbus Day here in the states so banks and the Post Office is closed. Some schools are closed but our county gave the children off from Thursday week ago through today for 'Fall Break'. Nick and I continued our studies for all but 2 of the days and took those off only because of the dentist and doctor visits taking most of the day!

Happy Thanksgiving Jim and all our Canadian friends.

Diane

One thing you lose when you retire; holidays.. They are just another day. I have been trying to figure how I can take a day off, but I am not sure I like the thought.

Thanks for the best wishes. By rights, to celebrate our original Thanksgiving, we should be on our knees thanking God for our safe arrival, and celebrate by having a sparse meal. That was Frobisher's original Thanksgiving.

Cheers,

Jim

PS. Who are these Cubs anyway?

Somewhat like Americans, it is a time for family gatherings and a feast around the family table. Many will have turkey because what happens in the USA eventually floats up here.

As for our house, we don't pay a lot of mind to it, but we usually have lamb. I am not fussy about turkey. We will bring wife's mother out to house for a dinner. It is good to get her out and away from her dwelling for a change.

Daughter has Thanksgiving in Florida and will celebrate again in November.

Cheers,

Jim

I penned this bit of brilliance on page 2, but apparently it was not read, so I shall repeat it here:

OK, this is the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend. Do you know its origin?

We all know the stories about the Mayflower and the Pilgrims, both myth and fact, but how much do we know about Canadian Thanksgiving?

It goes back, forty-three years before the Mayflower, to 1578, when some English sailors crossed the North Atlantic, and had a tough go of it. When they landed in Frobisher Bay, they knelt down on a desolate shore some 5000 kms from home. Their meal was salt beef, biscuits and peas....some Thanksgiving dinner.

Now you know a little about this Thanksgiving.

Here is a little bit more Jim. I found it quite interesting!

A Canadian Thanksgiving

In Canada, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday in October. Unlike the American tradition of remembering Pilgrims and settling in the New World, Canadians give thanks for a successful harvest. The harvest season falls earlier in Canada compared to the United States due to the simple fact that Canada is further north.

Harvest celebrations have been around a long time. Ever since the very first harvest, about 2,000 years ago, people have given thanks for a prosperous bounty.

The first formal Canadian Thanksgiving was held just over 40 years prior to the pilgrims landing in Massachusetts. An English explorer named Martin Frobisher had been trying to find a northern passage to the Orient. He did not succeed but he did establish a settlement in Northern America and he did celebrate a harvest feast. This is considered the first Canadian Thanksgiving.

In 1957, Parliament announced that on the second Monday in October that Thanksgiving would be "a day of general thanksgiving to almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed."

During the American Revolution, Americans who remained loyal to England moved to Canada where they brought the customs and practices of the American Thanksgiving to Canada. There are many similarities between the two Thanksgivings such as the cornucopia and the pumpkin pie.

According to one Canadian resource the Canadian table usually features venison and waterfowl over turkey. However, a professor from Durham College tells us that in Southern Ontario eating waterfowl or venison at Thanksgiving has never happened and that the turkey or/and ham is the featured food.

Conversely, Lee adamantly states that when he was young "wild duck/goose was always served for Thanksgiving and, if they were fortunate venison as well! This was a common practice in that area at that time."

Well I thought I would look in before I go to bed, but the place seems deserted.

Rob sends his thanks to all those who wished him a happy birthday.

God Bless,

Sheila

Good night, Sheila. I trust Rob enjoyed his day.
Yes, not much is going on in here. It just isn't as busy as it once was. Perhaps much of the usual conversation has slipped to other threads, under their own headings.

Lately, I just take a gander at the times and go back to the old site; Crosswalk, and have a conversation there.

Cheers, and blessings,

Jim

Hello Jim,

I thought I would take a wander round. Yes, Rob says he has had a good day thank you. The church meeting went on longer than we expected tho.

Yes, it does seem quiet in here. Have you had a good day? Have you been working or did you take a break today?

Blessings

Sheila

To be honest, I have been working in the kitchen and outdoors. I baked a few lemon merangue pies..daughter's husband loves them. Then we stacked firewood in the shed awaiting the enxt delivery tomorrow.

I didn't do any drawings to-day...I like lengthy breaks from them.

Take care,

Jim

I didn't know you could cook Jim. That's great. Have you ever made orange meringue pie, that is also very nice.

Rob makes some very good Chelsea Buns and Rum Babas. Actually he is a very good cook, but not so hot on the clearing up afterwards.

What else do you bake?
