So why do so many still cling to the hope of climate change catastrophe? The scientists offer their own view in the Journal:

“Alarmism over climate is of great benefit to many, providing government funding for academic research and a reason for government bureaucracies to grow.”

As they say, follow the money.

Don't forget "Cap and Trade" AKA "The tax on thin air" coming to America.
Australia has defeated attempts (so far) to pass the aussie version:

    http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2009/08/17/a_tax_on_thin_air_97917.html

Trillions-Billions-Millions to be collected on a tax of our "carbon emissions".

If "global warming" is mankind's fault because of carbon emissions through the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heating and transportation etc. then according to Al Gore and devotees we must be taxed for our sins against mother earth.

Each according to our "carbon footprint".

How many "500" year events have you had in your state in the last half dozen years? I think Washington has had at least 3 or 4.

Think about it for a minute, Bill. Why are there "500 year events?"

Because the solar cycle covers an 1100 year period varying between no sunspots per year during one of the minimums of the cycle and over 50,000 sun spots during one of the maximums of the cycle.

The warming and cooling of the earth is cyclical due to the variable temperature of the sun.

Global warming/cooling is a natural cycle that repeats every 1100 years.

As to the events over "the last half dozen years" you are aware, are you not, that global temperatures ceased rising in the year 2000? :)

Coal is here to stay, considering China relies on it for 70% of their energy use. In the US it is 40% I think. When you consider how much coal is being used, and that global temps have only risen .8 degree Kelvin over the last 150 years (OP) it seems we should be using every energy resource that we have, not just the politically correct ones

It is a number chosen to mean "unlikely" to most people seeing it. It is applied to most every sort of natural event that can be covered by insurance.

You missed the point, Bill. The solar cycle covers 1100 years. Half of that is 550 years. At the top of the cycle we get warm weather phenomena of the 500 year type and at the bottom of that cycle we get cold weather phenomena of the 500 year type. The rest of the time we get milder weather typical of the middle portions of the cycle.
