Hi,
Is there a difference between the Hebrews and Jews? I realise there probably isn't but why are the two words ascribed to the same group if so? Is it a case that I am British but I am also English ?

Hebrews and Jews?

I've always thought of the two as this:
Hebrews = those in the ethnic group
Jews = those who practice the religion
Many times these groups will be essentially the same in the scriptures. -

If I remember history right, the Hebrews were generally called "Jews" after the deportation into Babylon. The northern ten tribes of Israel had already been wiped out, and all that was left was Judah and Benjamin. The descendents of Benjamin were very few and were absorbed into Judah, so to speak, so the people left were of the tribe of Judah. "Jews" was slang for those of "Judah", either the people or the nation.

psalm 40:17
If you look I think you will find that the word "Jew" comes from the word Judah, ie from the two tribes Juday and Benjamin that assimilated together after 586BCE.
If you will remember the two tribes in the South were known as "Judah" and the 10 tribes in the north were known as Israel. I think this is the derivation and explanation of the names.
As different times and in different places in the OT the nation is known as Israel which is usually the entive nation, then after the post-Solomon civil war it is know as Israel in the north and Judah in the south. There were mostly only Jews (Judah) and Benjamin in the south at the time when our Lord came forth.
Check me out but I believe you will find this to be accurate.

Again,
The work "Hebrews" as best as I remember from grad school means one who has crossed over.
Please help me with my memory and or my accuracy.

Hebrews=All Israelis
Jews=tribes of Judah, Benjamin, Levi
As all Ohioans are Americans, but not all Americans are Ohioans...All Jews are Israelis(Hebrews), but not all Hebrews (Israelis) are Jews. -
Correct, robycop3!
-
But. . . that doesn't account for the individuals who practice Judaism but are not of those tribes. They are still Jews.
-
All Jews are not Isralites. Judaism is a religion.
-
Yes, Judaism is a religion, but the Jews are PEOPLE, regardless of their religion.
-
Remember, Sammy Davis Jr, the Black entertainer, was a Jew. Judaism is a religion. A person can be a Jew and be of ANY ethnic variation.
Hebrew is a language. The scriptures of the Jew (Jewish religion) is written in Hebrew.
Another distinction in the words. -
Hi,
Thank you all for your replies, I am at least less confused now than I was ;)

I'd be willing to say that a Christian couple named Isidore and Yael Cohen(nee Lieberman) would be Jews.
