Human Consumption of Dogs and Cats - Appalling!

I just received the photo and article, and it made me sick. I was aware of Asians who sell, butcher and consume dog and cat meat, but the photo makes the practice even that much more disgusting.

In the early 80' I served in a community advisory board for the local animal shelter, and once I discovered that the local animal shelter would freeze dry their animals scheduled to be put down, and in turn sell the frozen pets to Asain markets in order to help maintain their yearly budgets. Once I discovered they were doing this, I resigned.

However, if you open it and are as appalled as I was, join the millions of folks who are going to boycott South Korea and the Winter Olympics for sustaining this practice.

Granted, this is life in other cultures and societies, but does it really have to be this way?

Should they boycott us because we eat cheese and milk, the smell and taste, if they can bring themselves to taste it, make them sick to their stomach?

We eat pork. May find that very offensive. Should they boycott us?

Hindus find it very offensive that we eat any kind of meat.


We cannot expect the entire world to have the same likes or dislikes.

The only thing in those articles that I found truly "wrong" was some poor treatment of the animals, like neglect or boiling alive and beating. Other than that, I think it's way over the top for us to criticize another country's treatment of dogs when our own poultry industries are much, much worse.

While I am an animal lover and would not eat dogs or cats, I can understand they are considered a source of food for other countries.

I was just kidding above. We have many pets, a Maltese, cat, and seven parakeets. We have always had pets in our lives.

That's just how it is. Not all countries eat the same. Meat is meat, hungry is hungry, waste is waste.

I spent a few years learning not to ask "what is this meat?" :laugh:

I'm a lot more offended by what I see out my front door half the time than over what animal meat is on the menu in some overseas country.

RDude- I wouldn't advise any trips to the Far East any time soon. In some areas, every part of an animal has culinary use.

RD, this thread reminded me of a visit I took to a chicken factory when I was a kid - here in the United States. Here were all these chickens stacked up in cages, each with no room, piled up as high as I could look. One chicken per tiny little space in these mass blocks of cages, indoors, no room to move around, and the lady trying to keep me from looking in there when the doors accidentally stayed open when she was bringing out a chicken to show us how they look and how they work.

The egg part and watching the machines light up the eggs so they'd know which ones to toss was pretty cool, but those poor chickens...

An animal is an animal. None should be mistreated whether they are going to be used for pets or for food.

But...it does happen, and seems to happen all over the world.

Wouldn't it be cool if teachers/pastors taught good stewardship of the earth and of animals, like the Bible teaches, with the diligence the topic deserves?

I wonder what we could do to change poor conditions for the animals that are raised for our food, and what would work.

Any ideas? It seems you have a heart for animals and I understand being appalled at something in a culture that one hasn't come across before, or at least how much more intense it seems when you actually see it with your own eyes. I think if people had the experience of "handling" their food whole, seeing the process, we'd all probably eat a lot less. LOL

Anyhow, I'm serious. Since we live in this country, it makes more sense to try to stop maltreatment here first and I'd love to one day be part of helping things change but have no clue how to start or where to start. Maybe you or others on the board have some experience with this stuff?

101 ways to wok your dog? When we lived in Minneapolis our Vietnamese neighbors had us over for their New Years celebration. They apologized for not having the best meat of all available... dog meat. A while later our dog disappeared and we always wondered where he ended up. My brother-in-law lives in Vietnam now and brought back pictures of the meat markets with dogs hanging on meat hooks with other kinds of animals. In the Bible dogs surely aren't viewed in a positive light.

:type:....if it weren't for my near death from kidney failure in June 2009, I'd not have changed my diet, which includes less meat. I try to eat a meat product only weekly. Everything else is protein by way of methods that do not include the killing of animals!

And yes, I realize that this is a cultural thing. I know that all of the meat eating cultures offend those who don't eat meat, period. I know that pigs disturb Jewish and Arab folks.

However, I was shocked to see these photos, and felt that, while it is their business [as to what they eat], the manner in which they treat the animals is appalling. SO is the manner in which we treat our cows, chickens, turkeys, and pigs!

This is why I stand with those who protest the poor treatment of animals to be raised for human consumption.
