I've noticed something about you, sir. You cannot seem to debate with others without displaying a judgemental attitude or resorting to personal attacks. If you will read my posts in this thread more carefully, perhaps you would see that I ACTUALLY AGREE WITH YOU FOR ONCE about something, that is, that killing should not be a thrill. Good grief. Get over your personal prejudice towards me, ok?

Some people get their thrills in the woods and some get them on the BB.

When was the last time you heard of someone eating coon meat... of course it is done for fun.
This is the first time :)
Hunting is fun.. although I haven't done if for 15 yrs.. It is relaxing, it heightens the senses, it controls animal populations.. and since there is nothing against it in the Bible it can only be someone's opinion that it is wrong.
The Bible says a lot about hunting, and I see no reference where it is ever just done for the "Thrill".
For those of you that don't like Hunting.. (killing animals with NO soul)...
Actually there is Scripture pointing to animals having souls, but anyway...
I don't think anybody has condemned hunting. The condemnation is the "fun" and "thrill", not the necessity. I see no reference of hunters in the Bible taking delight in killing an animal.
How much do you pay to see Boxing on pay per view.. the beating up of people with a soul for sport...
I don't care for boxing :)
And if I may, isn't any sport self gratifying? Why do we watch NFL.. or Play football.. Isn't it for self gratification... Do we pride ourselves when our cities win sporting competitions...

Isn't pride a sin...

YEP...

So don't sit behind your TV on a Sunday afternoon watching football while claiming that other sports are sins.... That is not very consistent...
Apples and oranges. Paul mentions many competitions in the NT. A sport is recreational. Recreational killing should not be enjoyed by any believer.

BTW.. I hope the Bengals kick the Steeler's butts today! LOL
You called it! Any week the Steelers lose takes the sting of the Browns losing away just a little.

Hijack alert... But my Cowboys lost!.. . OK.. hijack alert over... LOL

I know of NO hunter that doesn't plan and execute a good hunt that doesn't get excited when they see that big buck in their scope.. and when it turns sideways, and the hunter puts that crosshair on the buck, squeezes the trigger, sees the buck fall.. .. I know of no hunter that doesn't get excited and isn't thrilled... they take a picture holding the buck to show off their trophy... That's Hunting!...

Most hunters look for the best place to put up their treestand, they find where the ruts are.. they learn the big buck's habits.. most will feed them yr round.. in deer feeders full of corn.. they make plans all for opening day, in hopes of getting a big 10 point... If someone like that would tell me they don't get a thrill out of the hunt.. I would say they are lying...

Now that said.. I laughed last yr on the first day of deer season, hunters were out in force in the woods around me, and there was a big ol buck standing in my backyard at noon.. because he knew he was safe there... since I don't hunt. Truth be told, I know where one is right now.. but I'm not telling!...

That buck always shows up in OUR yard during off-season!!
Any time in season and he would NOT be safe...disclaimer: straight to our freezer and then to our dinner plates!

I'm a gunowner. I was an outdoorsman. I hunted avidly growing up. My entire family including those on my wife's side are gun enthusiasts and hunters. You can't snow me, so don't try. I know why people engage in the sport of hunting. It isn't for food, it's for the thrill. What one does with the carcass afterward, whether it's eaten or given to charity or allowed to rot in the woods, is irrelevant.

Question: Is hunting for sport moral?

I'm not asking about killing for food, population or pest control. I'm asking about hunting for sport.

In my opinion to kill strictly for sport is wrong. I would not do it and don't enjoy seeing anyone else do it.

However, I am a gun owner and if you lived in the city I do, you would do well to own a gun also.

I got this thread figured out now. You can kill a deer as long as you don't enjoy doing it. :BangHead:

I hunt and know many who do as well. I do not know a single hunter that goes into the woods primarily for the so-called thrill of killing. The claim that most hunt for that reason alone is speculative and unsubstantiated opinion.

I like the thrill of hunting---which is different than the thrill of killing as most anti-hunters are against---it thrills me to hunt--and if I see a deer--I'm gonna shoot the thing--take it home--skin it--process the meat and eat it---but if I DON'T see a deer all year while out hunting---big "whoop-te-do"--it will still thrill me to be out hunting

Just like I like the thrill of fishing---man--I can fish all day long--if I catch something--bream, white perch, bass---I'm gonna take um home and have me a Cajun fish fry--but if I go fishing and don't catch a thing--it still thrills me to be out fishing

There was a deer hunter in my former church who worked out a deal with my wife---he'd give her a couple packages of deer "back strap" in exchange for home made Pecan pies--he got the pie--I got the back strap---a good trade off that always thrilled me

This thread is ridiculous. I am from a family of hunters. They enjoy the hunt. They enjoy the meat. They enjoy the whole experience. They do not waste the meat.

Now fishing for sport is something I'm against. That is a waste.

I hunt, and I fish and I enjoy both.

And so you should. What I meant was when fish meat is wasted.

But, I am living by a double standard, because I certainly do not use the meat from the mice I kill. And yes, I'm glad to see that they've died----except when they get up in the dryer and make quite a stink.

What say ye about killing/poisoning mice? Squashing spiders? Swatting flies? Slapping mosquitos (which I do with glee)?

I have never met anyone who waste fish. And those who do it for sport usually use the catch and release method to include those who create television shows.

Just so I'm clear----I search my house for mosquitos. No joke. And when I find them, even if they are minding their own business, I kill them. Then I let out a cackle. I find. I conquer. I laugh. End of story.

I once stepped on a mouse to kill it. Of course, dh told me to do it, and I was just being my normal submissive self, so it's all good.

In another thread:

In law there is a difference between hunting and foraging. Foraging is gathering food whether it's berries or deer meat, but hunting is a reglated sport. It's the thrill of the kill that drives men to the woods at this time of year.

Is hunting for sport a moral activity? Would Christ approve? I say no.

I don't hunt for sport. I hunt because it puts food on our table.

Guys who hunt just because they enjoy killing things scare me.

I see no purpose in hunting in this age. Meat and food are available every mile in the US. To claim it is done for the meat alone is an excuse, IMO to cover up the thrill of killing an animal unnecessarily.

So then, it's wrong to kill animals for meat, yourself, but it's OK to pay somebody else to do it for you?

I feel no more "thrill" hunting than I do butchering a hog. The only difference is that I appreciate the skill it takes to hunt.

I'm talking about a group of men who after a large breakfast go out to hunt for fun (who are not hungry, don't need the food).

What men don't need food to survive?

Supermarkets are not gov't ran, and I don't believe we will need to hunt to survive. I may be wrong, but I believe God will meet my needs regardless.

But unless you believe God is just going to drop food on you out of the sky, like He did with the Israelites, that food still has to come from somewhere.

When I have a craving for a double cheeseburger, I let someone else kill the cow, and I go and buy one. There was no such luxury then.

So then, you have no problem with somebody else killing an animal for your pleasure. So let's be honest here: it isn't that you don't think animals shouldn't be killed for pleasure, it's just that you don't want to get your hands dirty or have to look at the animal that's being killed.

There's nothing morally wrong with hunting, so long as it's in context and done with responsibility. For example, hunting a nonendangered animal, and using that aminal for food. If, otoh, a person is killing an animal just for the sake of killing an animal, then I would ask what the person's motive is.

This is one reason I hated it when my boys to watched Bambi, and had to de-install the animal rights junk that is prevalent in Bambi... In that movie, the hunters are the bad people while poor ole Bambi's mother gets it...

"mama... mama.... ".. Boo hoo... it's just a deer... I was yelling.. "don't let the buck get away!"

We live on a farm and when our children were little, people were always giving us farm-themed books and toys, which we really appreciated. The only problem was that they made the animals out to be cute and cuddly (obviously never written by somebody who's been in a cow pen on a hot day), had names, talked, etc.

This presented problems later on because, on a farm, animals come in two categories: those that are pets and those that are food.

That's why rule #1 on any farm is DON'T LET THE CHILDREN NAME THE ANIMALS!
