It's scary how many people are so willing to accept the federal government's intrusion into every aspect of their daily lives now including "volunteer" service to the community.

The Obamanites sure seem fully convinced in all things government.

If this is how it must be then perhaps we should all just report to the nearest federal community organizer office Monday morning for our week's assignments and again on Friday for our weekly allotment.

One even thinks it would be no different than the existing government school system - another model of failure.

How is this worse then listening to your phone calls and incarcerating you with no charges or trial? Why is government only good when it for so called "homeland defense" and bad when it's to serve the good of the people?

Now that is rich. Someone from NJ calling anyone city folks. Your whole state is one giant city. Anyway, there is plenty of time in the day to take care of your family and help others. You seem to focus on volunteering for civic functions. Most people on this board help others through their local church, and do more than talk about it.

Just curious, since you seem fixated on government volunteerism, how much time did you spend serving this country?

Conservatives are no more opposed to the intervention of government into the lives of people than progressives are. Conservatives have areas of intervention that they support and progressives have areas of intervention that they support.

Well one thing for sure, I am working here to make it a requirement for the students here.. There are too many that are only thinking of themselves.

We teach Math, reading, science, English... all a requirement...

We need to be teaching kids how to live in the world by helping each other...

So I am a strong proponent of required Community service in High School.

It worked where I used to live.
And I saw Teens come to Christ this way.

They came to our youth group to do some CS... and found Christ.

You do not know what you are talking about. The only Federal intervention we support are those that are needed to fight against things like g*y marriage and the slaughter of children.

    Great Post LE.....

    :type:

:wavey: I'm quite positive that BHO means well, and one can't forget that he knows first-hand that he can share the responsibilities of serving this country with others, because he shared the responsibilities of US Senator with his aides and staffers while he ran for POTUS.....

One should never, NEVER forget, that BHO allowed his staff and office aides to affectively carry out the duties of his office for 23 of his first 24 months as Senator, while he ran for POTUS. His staff "served" in his absence, and did it so well, that it poses an interesting question for ALL Americans: Do we really need men and women to be elected to the Senate when a group of hirelings can do the job. This would really save America a lot of money. Let's do away with the Congressional folks, and simply hire people off the street to write laws, review laws, and vote on laws.

BHO knows all about sharing, and when he calls on all Americans to serve their country, I think this is what he intends to do while he begins his campaign bid for the office of the Supreme Allied Leader of the EU. And I'd love to help him run for this office, because it would send him to Europe, and put Joe, "the Biden" in charge as POTUS.

Kudos LE, you hit this one out-of-the-park!!!

Your question is an untrue presumption and you're trying to change subjects.

I would say that you're misinterpreting this description of Obama's plans. Are you familiar with the peace Corps and Americorps?

    http://www.peacecorps.gov/

    http://www.americorps.org/about/newsroom/statements_detail.asp?tbl_pr_id=1158

Both of these are completely voluntary. If you look once again at the description of Obama's recommendation:

    America Serves

"When you choose to serve -- whether it's your nation, your community or simply your neighborhood -- you are connected to that fundamental American ideal that we want life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness not just for ourselves, but for all Americans. That's why it's called the American dream."

The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nation’s challenges. President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in underserved schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps. Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by setting a goal that all middle school and high school students do 50 hours of community service a year and by developing a plan so that all college students who conduct 100 hours of community service receive a universal and fully refundable tax credit ensuring that the first $4,000 of their college education is completely free. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start.

Nothing here says anything about forcing anyone to do anything but it does say that college students can cut their cost of going to college by participating. I don't see why all of you are so much up in arms about this except of course you've fought Obama on everything else so it's appropriate to fight him on this as well. Is that it?

According to tinytim, some states do things that way.

All of these are examples of programs - past included - that we don't need our federal government to be handling. The less they do the better off we'll all be. There are plenty of volunteer organizations that can do a much better job.

What states do and what the Fed does are two different things. However I doubt any state in this country mandates by law public service.

Not so. Conservatives also want intervention in people's personal lives in areas such as drug use and spying on citizens in the name of "national security".

It needs to be on the state level and it is not personal. It tears down society and destroys lives. Again drug use is not a personal issue.

Really? How many citizens do you personally know of that have been spied on?
