I was never in a church that taught women "could not" wear pants...nor did they teach that women should wear dresses.
In the 60s when I put on a pair of slacks for the first time(around the house), I felt, well, weird. But as goes the frog in hot water, I became used to it.
I don't wear modest apparel in order "to get to heaven", but I'd never go back to pants. I've not found anything I couldn't do in a dress...if there does come a time I run across something, then maybe it's not meant for me to do.

I like long skirts better, but I do wear slacks at times when it is appropriate like.....
I work out at a womans gym.. It would be pretty difficult to do some of those exersizes in a skirt..
or..
my hubby and I just went down to Gulf Shores for our vacation and I wore sweatpants and a t-shirt to go swimming in..(one thing you will not convince me of, is that bathing suits are EVER modest or appropriate)
or....
I wear them around the house to clean in..
Also, I take care of my ten month old baby, and though everyday care is possible in long skirts and dresses, I have found its a lot easier to get on the floor and play with him if I am wearing my jogging suit or pajamas..
However, the last time I wore my pants in public, with an exception of the gym, was before thanksgiving.. I feel kind of funny in them in public. -
Hey Emily! I love getting on the floor with all my grandbabies. Before I busted my knee, I could play "horsie" even in a dress. I do prefer skirts tho', long & flowing.
When my Mister was into roofing, I'd have to help. That was a real challenge, but I did it! Lining everything helps weight it down.

The main problems with this, that I relayed to them:
1. The command is for us not to try to look like the gender we are not.
2. Nearly everyone in Bible times wore similarly-cut main clothing.
3. I wore women's clothes, not men's. If this command were to preclude all pants, because they have some similarities to men's pants, then I also cannot wear gloves, certain hats, certain shirts, anything that looks like a kilt, some jackets, . . .
4. Their little extra-biblical rule went beyond what our God intended, thus they had demanded the place of our God in my life, which was not acceptable to either Him or me.
Funny story:
A few weeks after my first husband died, my muffler went out. I could not afford to have it fixed at the time, so I bought some muffler repair junk and was under the car with that and a wire coat hanger, fixing it. The pastor I had then drove by in front of my house.
When he saw me working on my car in coveralls (!!), he stopped and informed me that I should not be wearing them; that I should put on a pair of coulottes (split skirt, if you are not old enough to remember "coulottes").
I looked up at my car in my driveway, which was up about 3.5 from the street and looked back at him. "Okay. I can do that," I told him with a half-smile, "if you will come park your car down here below me and look up and watch me do it!"
It took him a while to "get it," but when he did, he responded, "Well, you shouldn't be working on a car -- that's men's work and not for a lady."
Completely dumbfounded, I responded, "Hm-m-m. Well, tell me what man is going to do it for me. Perhaps you?"
I can't remember his response, but it sure was not an offer, nor did he get anyone else to do it, because no one called. Anyway, I informed him that since no one had yet offered to help me, if the car, roof, or siding needed fixing, he may think it is men's work, but it was up to me to do it and I would continue doing it -- in pants. There was no way I was going to climb around doing that sort of stuff in a skirt.
There is a very good reason for those trashy little yard ornaments people used to put in their years -- the little grandma-type lady bent over so that her dress hiked up, showing her legs, right up to her skiddlywompus. :-D -
My wife and I attend a church that encourages casual dress but we choose to dress nice and modest. We have noticed that others are following our example.
I had one person come up to me and tell me that we are a come as you are church and I politely told them ," This is how I are." -
I go to a church with a strict dress code for women, no trousers and a veil/hat when the service is conducted. However, I find it annoying that men seem to get away with shorts (this is Australia) and whilst shorts are fine per se I find it does not conform to my idea of formal dress. Likewise there is a man with hair that is very long, clean and combed yes but loose, I find that annoying.
The brother who is in charge of handing out veils to visitors etc can be irritating in his diligence and self importance but..... hey I choose to go to this church and therefore I choose to accept these rules. -

Goodness if I went to a church that handed out veils for the visitors.... I would probley make the mistake of thinking it was a hanky. But since I now know what they are I promise I'll try not to make that mistake.

But in all seriousness I belive that the Holy Spirit will convict Gods own on what is concidered modest. I heard that there was a lady who would cuss because thats all she knew all her life, but after being saved and reading the word it gradually ceased as time went on. But true this....if someone keeps comming to church continually dressed like they ought to be on a corner... Then I say they need be reminded of the scriptures that say, "put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lust thereof. (Rom.13:14) or "let us not judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother's way." (Rom.14:13)

Not any more. The last church to which I belonged prohibited makeup, jewelry, bill caps, shorts, short skirts, pants for women, lapels (only enforced for men), neckties, patterned fabrics, and required cape dresses for women. On paper, women were to wear dark hose and dark shoes without open toes or high heels. Women were forbidden to cut their hair or go about unveiled in public. Men were not required to wear beards, but such was encouraged.

When men start making the rules(instead of God) theres a problem. When men try to force legalism on people theres a problem. God convicts people, God lets people know what HE wants of them. This is spiritual growth. When a person follows a set of rules given to them by men, that is not spiritual growth, it is obedience to legalism, which is man made religion. Which is not worship of God at all.

Legalism is not someone having a standard that another person does not and the person that does not have the standard call them a legalist. Legalism is adding something to salvation.

Sorry, disagree. Legalism is adding anything to grace for obtaining salvation, or blessings, etc. Grace plus anything is legalism.
What standard would that be that makes one more holy then another? According to the topic it is wearing a dress.
Saying a person needs your standard to be holy, or be like a Christian should is legalism.
Having different standards does not mean one is better in anyway then another. -

My ideal dress code would be t-shirts, jeans or bib overalls, and a baseball cap for the men (cuts down on the shine of the bald fellers reflecting sunshine in the pastor's face). For the women, it would be the same, except for the hat and with most women I know, there would not be nearly as many grease stains on the pants, nor would there be little worn circles on the rear pants pockets.
Anybody wearing a tie would be asked to remove it. -

The passage above says that "you who are younger" be subject to elders but it follows the warning to those in authority not to abuse this authority and not to be "domineering" or force people to do anything "out of compulsion." Scripture is clearly against legalistically imposed rules. -
Scripture clearly teaches against rebellion, even in the most "unfair" of circumstances. God even commands submission to Pharisees and abusive slave owners!
True, pastors are not to "lord it over" the flock, but setting up rules for their congregations' own good is well within their perogative.
I think 1Peter 5 teaches not that elders may not use compulsion, but that they are not to serve out of compulsion. After all, church discipline would be impossible without it, correct? -
Ahhh so nice to be able to live in freedom and know that I don't have to please any man, just God in how I dress.
