I know my other post was long and drawn out. So I'll make this short, and add a poll.

Thus is still a democracy, and a democracy elects leaders to REPRESENT their best interests in DC. Both Dem's and the GOP, and any fringe party officials have the responsibility to vote according to the will of their constituents, not according to their personal will or conscious.

In a democracy, the members of the House and Senate should not be swayed, or, bully-whipped by the president, pressured, cajoled, or bribed to vote a certain way.

If the Dem's capitulate or "cave" to the will of Obama, that makes for the beginning of a dictatorship right here in the middle of "Democracy Central." And this should be something for all Americans to be concerned about in regard to future referendums of major concern and interest to the majority.

do you think that "reconciliation" on the health care bill is a form of dictatorship in its earliest stages? Please take the poll, and feel free to comment.

    Shalom,

None of the above. There will be a bipartisan vote. It takes a majority to pass the bill, not a supermajority.

Funny, I heard no complaints from the right when the GOP used the same proviso.

    No.

Since its inception in 1974 (PL 93-344), reconciliation bills have been used by Republican and Democrats (list of usage can be found here). It is not a step towards a dictatorship.

I never support the use of reconciliation. However the fact is that both Democrat and Republican congresses, and presidents, have used reconciliation to pass legislation. Obama and the Democrats in Congress are doing what others have done.

Btw, the United States of America is not a democracy. It is a Republic.

There will be no "reconciliation" process.

Either the Senate Bill will pass as is, and become law, or it won't.

I have always wanted filibusters to be real filibusters - having to hold the floor and talk for days and days if a Senator(s) wants to stop a bill that has majority support among the members. Each side lets the other off way too easy in order to filibuster a bill.

If reconciliation is used it will be on the adjustments made to the Senate bill if the House passes it so that President Obama can sign it into law.

Not in a republic. They also have the responsibility to vote according to their best judgment. Otherwise, a Congressman or Senator would be accused of simply sticking his finger in the air to see which way the wind is blowing.

Many vulnerable Democrats up for re-election are between Barack and a hard place with this issue.

There won't be any "adjustments" if it passes.

These points are important. Our Founding Fathers abhorred the idea of a democracy. That's the problem with many of our senators...they wish a democracy.

Of course, having said that, they're even suspending judgment on this...because most people don't want this abomination.

    >. . . have the responsibility to vote according to the will of their constituents . . .

    Exactly what does this mean?

And if so, then why do we need a legislature? To propose the legislation in the first place?

Every county could put the names and addresses of registered voters on line. Any registered voter could then propose new legislation on line. There would be a specified time for voters to sign onto the petition. If it got 10% of the voters to sign on the Atty Gen would then put it into legalese and the voters would accept or reject.

Bingo - we have a winner!

A bill which passes with a majority vote is hardly a sign of dictatorship. It is a sign of, well, the majority winning.

No, but the bill itself is a subsequent step of many toward totalarianism.

Reconciliation is this instance is only one manner in which the senate Dems are attempting to con the house Dems.

    It's beautiful, really.

You have the typical democrat's misunderstanding (when in the majority) of what "bipartisan" means.

    How Do You Know???

Just wondering how you actually KNOW what our founding fathers abhorred... were you there? I'd like to hear your rationale for making this statement, MP. It would assist me in better understanding why I could be wrong in my post.

    I Disagree...

... how can it not be a dictatorship when Obama is forcing this health-care plan down the "thraots" of most Americans? Not only is he forcing us to have this plan... he is FORCING those who can make it happen, to vote for it, even if they may be voted out of office.

This is how dictaorships start. Hugo Chavez started this way, and Obama is on the same path.
