As a non-American, could I suggest that the issue of church - state seperation is bigger and more important than the American constitution? The issue needs to be studied from the scripture rather than the American founding fathers and other nationalists. The following of Christ is too important to be attached to a temporary political unit, such as a country ...

Good post Jim, thank you.

RLVaughn: Thanks for all the work you have done on this topic! It has been a real "Public Service." It is amazing and not amusing how little today's Baptists know about such an important topic, which is one of the Baptist Distinctives.
And to those from the rest of the world, the quotes rlvaughn gave from Baptist leaders express the general thought of Baptists, not just USA Baptists.
I am old enough to remember that every public school teacher I had, up until maybe High School, had a Bible on the desk. (Even the evolutionary science teacher). We even had a Baptist evangelist come to school, during school hours, and for an hour a day for a week taught and preached on the issues of young people of our day (@ 1969). No one was required to go, but practically everyone did - even heard some positive comments from those who probably had little other Christian influence in their lives. And a Baptist preacher delivered the baccalaureate address when we graduated.

Jim,
I think you have pointed out the true question very well. Thanks!

Bring back the good ol' days of the prophet anointing the king (see Samuel & David 1 Samuel 16:1-13)
...No, wait, correction...
Bring back the good ol' days of the LORD being King :D
