Should SBC Churches adopt Neo Pentecostalism

Right now there are churches in almost every country which call themselves Baptists on the sign out front who, nevertheless, arc not Baptists, but in reality are Pentecostal churches. Such churches are dishonest because they call themselves Baptists when they are not Baptists and because they are stealing real estate and physical property for which Baptists over the years have labored and paid.

We have to be careful who we let in our churches.

So many are looking for something tangible in their religious experience and seek it in pentecostalism, rather than finding it in the promises of the word and in the Lord Himself.

drfuss: I read the article and the author points out many of the excesses in many Pentecostal Churches. However, his description of pentecostal churches is hearsay. Note that he says "they say this" or "they say that". The same type of things could be said in other areas about many Baptist Churches, i.e. "they say this" or "they say that"

He talks about pentecostal beliefs, but not once did he reference a statement of faith of a major pentecostal denomination. While I don't agree with all of the statements of faith of the pentecostal denominations, he should reference their statements of faith in order for his article to be credible. He would probably find that the scriiptures are much more important than he indicates in the article.

One problem I have observed with Baptists is that they make sweeping statements about what others believe based on very limited and hearsay information or what other Baptists say. I think this article is a good example of just that.

Then some of us know exactly wat pentecostalism is supposed to believe and practice. Naturally the local assemblies will differ in practice, but this does not negate what they are supposed to believe according to their own doctrinal statements.

It is not always necessary to list details. Give some of us a little credit, please.

I think baptist especially SBC should stay far away from pentecostals. They are armenianist, believe they can loose their salvation, believe that there are two baptisms. That baptism in the Holy Spirit is evidence primarily and only by the speaking of tongues, they come from the holiness background which is very legalistic, and most of all they subordinate (thought they don't say this but in practice it is true) scriptures to their emotions.

Pentecostalism is full of error, why should anyone who desires to be biblical want to adopt their errors? Baptism is a part of salvation and physically washes away sin, should we adopt that? Holy Spirit does not indwell all beleivers, but only a special few, who can prove it by talking in tongues, should we adopt that? That your only in obedience to God, only spiritual and love God if you speak in tongues, should we adopt that? If you don't speak in tongues you are sinning by resisting the Holy Spirit, should we adopt that? Scripture is not authority, but emotions and expereince trump scripture,they have more authority over the christian, should we adopt that?

Pentecostalisn is just as visable in T. D. Jakes & Joel Osteens ministeries as in the snake handlers in the hills of Appalachia. The "Great Revivals" that we hear about on Africa and South America are primarily Pentecostal and and referred to as the great endtime coming to the LORD.

drfuss: I have no doubt that you have heard the above from some Pentecostals. I have heard the same type of things and more from members of a local independent pentecostal church. However, most of what you said, the majority of Pentecostals do not believe. Suggest you check it out via the statements of faith of the largest Pentecostal denominations. I see no evidence of the sign gifts in operation. There are a lot of claims for it, but I've seen no evidence. Speaking in tongues is speaking in a known foreign language, which is not what is happening.

I see nothing to learn from Pentecostal beliefs, especially those that believe you must speak in tongues to show you are saved, and the 2nd infilling of the Holy Spirit. Both of these are unbiblical.

In that case, the op should have said should the SBC adopt the pentecostal believes of a certain pentecostal church and give the name of the church. Otherwise any and all pentecostal beliefs and methods apply to the conversation.

Saying that Pentecostals believe like the pentecostal church in your area is like me saying that Baptists: do not believe in eternal security, don't allow women to wear slacks, and are very charistmatic in their worship.

There are almost as many different types of Pentecostal churches as there are Baptist churches.

Whether Baptists admit it or not, they are tilting toward Pentecostalism. Twenty years ago, I never saw a hand raised in a Baptist worship service. Today you can go to most any SBC church and a significant number of hands will be in the air during singing and prayer.
