Featured Sunday Attire?

My real church, the one I am interested in is the church of the street....where I can talk to people one to one & I can attempt to help them, pray with them, commiserate with them, have coffee with them etc. There I look to see Christ in the least of my brethren....there I am alive & when I look into these folks eyes I can see the face of Christ. Until you go out there, pounding the pavement & truly meet with these people, you will never understand.

We can note Matthew 23:5 also, where Jesus, while rebuking the Pharisees, rebuked them for wearing dressy clothes.

Hmm... interesting. I don't know of anywhere in the Bible where "casual" clothes are looked down on.

 

What we tend to forget is that in Jesus' time, the common people did not have changes of clothes like we have today. What they wore to go shopping, to work, and to church was all the same thing. Which argues further against the "special church clothes" theory.

The only people who had "special" clothes for worship were the priests.

My anser is that everyone should be free to dress in any way they they desire to, short of nude.

If the church I was attending had a normal dress of a suit and tie, out of respect I would wear one. The church I attend has a very old and small population. It seems acceptable to wear dress pants and a collared shirt, so I do.

Sunday attire is about as significant to a worship service as music. As long as you are not dressing up or down for the wrong reasons. If I am dressing up to show my superiority over one group or persons then this is the wrong reason, just as dressing down as a symbol of my meekness and humility is also. Here again it is the intent.

 

Dilemma...

And a confession from my older and wilder days. I always found skirts and dresses to be "hot" or "sexy" whereas jeans...meh! I'm sure that's a tad too transparent for some, but there you have it. And I know that I'm not the only one (or wasn't, my eyes and attention are for my wife only these days) How's that reconcile with "pleasing" or "modest" or a "meek" standard? So, women dressing "godly" or "god-pleasing" may be the very thing that entices...just sayin'.

And to reiterate, I'm happily married to a major hottie. For me, she puts all other women to shame, no matter what she wears. We're blessed in that we have little money and no ability or need to worry therefore about how we can or can't dress anyway. If it's clean, neat and covers the goods, it's aces!

She shops at thrift stores, I hit the Wally-word t-shirt section. I'm miffed at them now, too. They seem to have discontinued the Faded Glory t-shirt line in my region...I'm runin' outa fresh go-ta'-meet'n T's, dadrattet!

My only option was "children and teens same as parents". I wore orange khaki shorts and T yesterday, my wife wore jeans and T, and kids wore shorts and shirts.

 

At least you're consistent... one more time... CHURCH isn't an event. A worship gathering (service) is an event. Church is a person or group of people who have been called out, saved, and are being sanctified by the living God.

Here's the problem with taking the tradition of dressing up too far... Elijah and John the Baptist (Baptizer) wouldn't be welcome in your service... to preach! Camel skin and a leather belt are a good thing!!!

 

So, if that's what church is, then wouldn't it stand to reason that the corporate gathering of those people (aka "the worship service") be for those people?

I guess maybe the prohibition against lying is different in the NLT than it is in a real Bible.
