THE DIET THREAD

Thanks, Sue. No pork rinds for me, but Ed likes them. This will probably not be a complete lifestyle change for me. I like bread, potatoes, and rice. But I know I can lose weight this way because I have done it before.

I'm hoping that it works for Ed. He doesn't even like potatoes. It is amazing what they seem to think makes one gain weight, isn't it?

I don't eat a lot of oil, butter, mayo, cheese because one doctor told me to omit from my diet. Now this South Beach Diet says that some of this is good. He says ketchup is bad. I don't eat ketchup.

I like white, soft bread and this seems to be the greatest offender of all. Oh well, if we could find the perfect diet, we would be thin, healthy, and rich.

Betty: Everyone doesn't gain weight on the same things. That is what everyone should find out before they choose a diet. We have to know our bodies.

I happen to be one who can have fat and calories with no problems, but if I eat carbs - I gain weight. Some people are just the opposite. Carbs do not bother them but calories and/or fat do etc...

If I eat a low-fat diet, I gain weight!

I don't like pork rinds either (as a snack) but I grind them up and use them in various low carb recipes and they turn out very scrumptious!

I have lost about 10 lbs in the last 3 months. I actually lost it in about 2 months and haven't really progressed in the last 3-4 weeks or so.

Not terribly overweight to begin with but it was either spend less money on food or more money on new clothes that fit

I started out with a liquid breakfast with Carnation Instant Breakfast w/skim milk (usually hot) and a glass of orange juice with my supplements. I walk about 30 minutes 4-5 days a week at the mall right after breakfast then go to work. That seems to get my metabolism going and sets the tone for the rest of the day. I recently added a scrambled egg with a little velveeta to my breakfast because I was really getting hungry mid morning. I do not skip meals and am pretty good about not snacking. But I am finding that I am starting to get hungry at bedtime (stomach growling hungry, not cravings). I also have to be careful about what I eat for lunch when I get home from work or I may end up on the couch sleeping for the rest of the afternoon.

I wonder if what I've heard about adding dairy products to your weight loss meal plan is true. With the Carnation and my mid-day cappucino, I am drinking a lot more skim milk than I used to and it did not seem to hurt my efforts.
I have not even considered Atkins or anything else that dramatically reduces carbs.

Encouraging all people who are trying to lose weight or trying to stay on a diet due to health.

Eating seems to be such a social thing. Any group gathering will probably have food. It is picnic time!

I don't have any problem eating out in restaurants but I really have a problem with group dinners or picnics. Yes, I am a Baptist and I went to lots of dinners on the ground when I was a child and youth, but I always ate what my mother took and nothing else.

I have learned to take a little bit of food and make it last a long time at these gatherings.

Even when we play games, we have snacks to eat.
Some of us munch and eat while we are on the computer or watching TV.

Our Sunday School Class goes out for breakfast or lunch for fellowship.

Are these problems for you?

What activities could we substitute for fellowship without food?

No food? And still be Baptist? Is that possible? I mean, we could do without an offering on occasion, but no food? Blasphemy! Blasphemy!

Really, you are right. Eating and social functions seem to go together (espacially here in the South...we even eat at funerals!).

In Christ,

I agree. If Baptists gave up potlucks; would they still be Baptist?

I have, however, started taking low carb dishes to potlucks. I put a toothpick in it with a sign that states what it is.....it is catching on and I have noticed several low carb dishes there lately.

That's a good idea, Sue. I really like to know what I am eating.

Now, how long does it take to get used to low carbs? I am eating twice as much as I did before I went on a diet and I am HUNGRY!

I have not seen any weight loss yet.

I have increased my exercise... walking more each day.

The important thing is that Ed is losing weight.

Does it have anything to do with how much a person needs to lose? I need to lose 10 pounds, but would like to lose 20.

I feel better, I just had my morning snack. Now when is lunch time?

Betty: I think it is much harder to lose when you just have 5-10# to lose. I have no idea why, but it seems to work that way with me.

In a heavier person, the first 10# comes off relatively easy for some reason.

About the potlucks. I also print up several copies of the recipe I take because I have requests for them and that way I don't forget who wanted one - I just hand them one!

I not only say what the recipe is when I put the card on the toothpick. I list the ingredients in case someone is allergic. (I never get to take home leftovers!)

Hi Fellow Dieters!

I covet your prayers.

I went back on my diet in earnest this week. I have lost 4# so far.

I started riding my bicycle again this morning. I made it 1.4 miles in 10 minutes. I am SO out of shape! I will try and ride it another mile this evening after the sun goes down.

I will increase the time and the distance once all my body parts get used to riding again.

Off to the shower......

Well, I've found the weight you've lost and a few more pounds. I only need to lose 10-20 lbs (Hubby prefers me quite thin but it makes my face look old). This extra weight is quite uncomfortable but I think I'm snacking constantly because of the stress of no income/ job and the worry.

Beginning today! Caloric limitations.

I need to learn to ride a bike! I've slacked-up on my walking-never did really reach my goal of 10 miles/day...tho' I did do it once by breaking it up(5 in the a.m. & 5 in the p.m.), but don't know if that really "counts". ;)

My 150# took several years to come-off because I was sporadic...and now I'm in a slump-only a pound here & there. :(

Granny, did you just say that you have lost 150 pounds? Tell us how you did it.

That's great, Sue! Way to go!

Diane, that is one thing I don't do is eat when I am stressed or at least I think I don't.

Ed has lost 3 pounds and I have lost 3 pounds since we started our diet on Monday. Most difficult 3 pounds I have ever lost. Ed is doing better than I am. I think we both feel better.

I had a sugar low or maybe it was lack of caffeine one afternoon and couldn't concentrate very well so I did drink a regular coke. I think it was a sugar low because I had not cut the caffeine as drastically as the sugar.

I have added a 20 minute walk each day. I quit walking every day during the winter, but it is summer here!

Keep up the good work everyone!

Betty, I've NEVER been one who COULD eat when nervous or anxious but since menopause have found that I munch on something from noon til midnight during times of stress.

I had lost from 144 lbs back in 2000 to 114 lbs by March 2002 which was TOO thin. Now the doctors scales say I weight 136 lbs but my scales say 129 lbs. My size 6-8 pants are not going on and most of the weight gain is in my abdomen and hip/ thigh area. My FACE looks much younger tho!

Actually, it's more than 150#! My dear brother who gave me this 'puter, challenged me a few years ago to lose 100#, at least. He wanted me to get back down to my youthful weight of 110#.

That's what I weighed on my wedding day. Nine months and 7 days later, I weighed 180, when our first daughter was born. After that, it was all up-hill.
laugh.gif
Having 4 children born in a 5yr span, also a 'miscarriage', I just never had the strength to recover...excuses, excuses, I know.

When I couldn't do anything anymore, like play in the floor, or climb on the roof, things like that, I knew I was in trouble. By then, the damage had been done & I was found to have high blood pressure. That's the last time I went to a dr. I've since been trying to "wean" myself from the prescription meds by subbing natural stuff.

My brother said he'd give me $100, which seemed like $1000 to me, and I took him on. My sister bought a treadmill & at first I could only do 2-3 minutes! Then I could do 5, then 10, soon 30, etc. But I hated being "glued" to one spot and I hated to 'exercise'!

So I figured there had to be a better way! And there was!
thumbs.gif
I started "cutting back" on what I ate; instead of 3 biscuits, I ate one, instead of 2 eggs, 1, etc. And I learned not to eat after 5(6 at the latest). I switched from real sugar to Splenda. I cut out all fats at first and then slowly added some fat. Now I eat things I want, but in moderation.

I also discovered the wonderful world of walking. We live in the country with lots of dirt roads, so it's kinda hard after a rain, tho' fun! ;) I'm still heading for that goal of 110# & if I don't make it, well, I'll be the perfect weight when my brother sees me in Heaven.

Granny: That is quite a story! Congratulations on your weight loss!

And, yes, exercise counts whether you do it all at one time or split it up between morning and evening (that's what I do).

I have never had a treadmill, but I DID have an exercise bicycle. I hated it! I thought, this is silly when I can get on a real bicycle and 'see the sights' while I am exercising! So that is what I do. ;)

My family did not own a car the whole time I was growing up so we walked everyplace. Walking is not pleasurable for me now...It is a means to get from one place to another.

I lost another pound, that makes 5# this week. Well, I am off to do my morning ride.

We're planning on hitting the diet again this Friday (payday, so we can buy groceries).

I am wanting to start walking, but we live in a bad neighborhood. Plus, I've got one humdinger of an ingrown toenail right now!!! But, by next week, I should be able to walk freely. I drive a forklift at work, and I have discovered that I am VERY out of shape!

Before we dropped our diet (way back in October...holidays), I had lost 88 pounds. That has really dwindled (I'm at a net loss of about 45-50 right now), and I can feel it. We (my wife and I) really need to lose a person each(=a lot).

I weighed 230 when we were married the December after high school (1986). But, being right at 6' with really broad shoulders, I didn't look it. Now, I could be a Richard Simmons poster child. Thankfully, our daughter hasn't followed our example (she's in the "normal" range, but thinks she's fat...but really it is CURVES! I'm gonna have to buy me a biggggggg gun).

In Christ,

WEll, I am praying for you all. I know it is so hard to lose. I am still on my new way of eating, and I have dropped another 2 pounds, totaling 52. I still have some more to go, but I feel like a new gal. I am just now getting to where I exercise regularly, but I think I am gonna have to start some weights to tone up my dear old saddlebags.
Yall keep up the good work!

WOW, you all are really an inspiration. We are beginning to see some results from our diet, but buying all this food to cook from scratch or make fresh salads for each meal is really expensive.

We ate some delicious low carb food with salad and drink at a restaurant today. The total for two was less than $10.00. We may frequent that place often until we lose some more weight and then gradually add our pasta, rice, potatoes, and bread.

I have been so hungry that anything tastes good now, though.

I'm sticking to it for Ed's sake.
