I had to go and pick up my daughter from school early today. She told me there was a substitute who gave them a journal assignment to tell about what dream they would want to come true if the new President could make it come true. I called the teacher and confirmed it. I am now setting a meeting with the principle.

What's the problem? It's sounds like a creative writing assignment to me.
If you are worried about something like this then you seriously need to remove your kids from public school 'cause there is a lot worse happening. -
I thought it sounded like a reasonable assignment.

Wow.... So we should dream about what Obama can make come true for us? Certainly says quite a bit. And it is without a doubt political indoctrination. We should not just accept this in our public schools. We should see that it is squelched.

According to your post there was not an assumption that he could.
-
Obama is going to make dreams come true?
A creative writing assignment?
Doesn't sound reasonable to me. Far from it.
Some people are going to have their hopes dashed pretty early on, I suspect...... -
Who said he could make dreams come true???????
The teacher asked , "what would your dream be IF he could make it come true?" -

I think a better way to have worded it is this:
MLK, Jr. spoke of "I have a dream". Today we are seeing history happen where that dream of MLK's has come true.
If you knew that one of your dreams would come true, what would you dream?
To even suppose that President Obama could make wishes come true makes him divine or magical. He's not. I agree that I'd not be happy. -

If I were as bothered by the assignment as you are I would try to get an appointment with the school principal. -
The upside down American flag is a signal that America is in distress.

A few years ago when I taught in our public school system, we would all cringe when people like this would come on campus and complain about insignificant things, like this assignment.
Some parents were the laughing stock of the school and didn't even know it. -

I don't like the assignment, but I don't think it's Obama indoctrination. I think it's timing (MLK Day combined with the inauguration) and the way education has been heading for ages.
I personally like for students to choose their own writing topics/ideas based on the vast quantity of reading that they've done. -
BTW It is allowable to fly the american flag upside down as a distress signal and while I don't completely agree with it's display as such here on the BB, being a veteran, I understand the spirit in which RevMitchell has done this.

I think you are looking to hard for offense here Rev.
I admit the wording choice is poor, but that is about it.
What if the assignment was:
What dream would you try to make true if you were the president?
or
What dream do you have for America that could come true?
Of course responses might be something like:
1. 6 months of summer vacation
2. An A in this assignment
3. Free ice cream at lunch for the rest of my life
4. That a government employee would show up at my home and complete this assignment for me. -
