Hey I have a quick question about tithing, hopefully it'll be a quick simple answer, so that no massive disagreements start
Here it is:
I am a graduate student right now on $30,000 loan per year. I get some scholarship but I do not work, should I tith my scholarship or not? It seems to not make sense to me that I should have to give money when I am so deep in loan....but then I really want to give to the church...and I do want a uncheerful heart when giving. Thanks!

You are to give in accordance with what you have been given.
Tithing is middle-class america's attempt at robbing God. -

No, loans are not income. After 4 years you will be $120,000 in debt. Give from you increase not your decrease.

Well, I have some scholarship about $4000 each year in addition to my loan, so I guess since I'm in debt, I should not see the $4000 as a income?

Tithe your education, that will ensure you've given at least 10% of your educated life to the Lord more than just your whole life.
If you can figure how much of the loan you are using to maintain your lifestyle, then you should consider it God's provision and tithe that 10% represented, don't include your educational expenses.
You can't go wrong giving back to the Lord. Store your treasures in Heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt. -
Tithing is not a requirement for the New Testament church. Period.
-
Is this what your pastor believes & preaches?
I just heard a sermon two weeks ago from an SBC pastor who would refute your statement. -

Only NT "tither" was the Pharisee Jesus condemned!
Tithing is 100% Old Testament doctrine. It was used to support the government (like our taxes do now) and the priestly class (about 10% of the population.
To extrapolate it to the Church is really really really BAD theology. -

Christ never condemned him for tithing - in fact, He said, he ought to have tithed. The tithe is the only standard God ever gave for giving. If you believe it is only OT only, then you have only one direction to go with it and that is higher. Ought we, the wealthiest people in the history of the world, who live under grace, understanding the NT teachings on stewardship and possessions, give less of God's money for His work that the poorest Jew under the law was required to give? Do you believe that the Jewish believers who had been tithing all of their lives suddenly stopped when they got saved because they were now under grace?

I really have my doubts as to whether the apostles, upon having money from sold property laid at their feet (Acts 5, and an increase to them)), turned over up to 23% to the Levites and priests.

1. Figures.
2. I am not surprised.
3. This should go in all posts.
4. You read the New Testament, right? -
DD, does your pastor preach that tithing is middle-class America's attempt at robbing God?
Perhaps I should email him a message & clue him in. Hope you're not preaching that message when you "fill in" LOL!
I always find it amazing you make these statements like they are the "norm" in Baptist churches. I needed a good laugh for the day, thanks! -
Sheeagle, when you decide to e-mail me and let me know that I believe what I do about tithing, I will be happy to respond with the biblical reasons why I believe what I do.
Seeing how I have been preaching at an independant baptist church since last year, I don't suppose I will mind being told that I believe what I do about tithing by someone else.
Have at it. Oh, you might want to include all those texts that say tithing is for us today.
Until then, chow. -

Daniel and Dr. Bob, please dear friends enlighten us about the correct amount one might give. I feel that Jesus taught that one should give all he had but since nobody is doing that what is wrong with 10%. I wish more people in our churches would trust God with that amount of the money he has blessed them with. Now concerning your remark about america robbing God thru tithing, really what good does such a statement do anybody? What point are you trying to make or is it just to enrage some posters. What's up?
Murph -
Nothing is wrong with 10% or any percentage. The problem is when it is preached that tithing is a requirement for the church.
To answer LadyEagle's question. My pastor preaches that members should tithe. I disagree with him on this point. I have told him that I do not agree with this doctrine, and he respects my viewpoint.
