I won't divulge the author of this statement, but it may have already been assumed to whom it belongs, but can this same mentality be ascribed to you? and why, or why not?

Salamander, I understand the feelings of that poster. With this being a worldwide internet forum, I think it is wise to keep certain personal information private, though I haven't gone quite as far as the person in your post.

On a different (but similar) note, one thing I find frustrating on the BB is being on a thread trying to discuss Scripture and people bringing up personal issues and experiences rather than discussing what the Bible says.

I was the one who made that statement. I'll tell you why.

I've been on this board for a few years now. At one point, another poster pieced together who I was and where I went to church. That person sought me out and I was at one point harrassed by this person at my church.

I have since then made it a rule to not divulge information about myself of a specific nature that might be unique to me. It has nothign to do with being "undercover". It has to do with me having a private life outside this board. Plain and simple. Not just for my own protection, but for the protection of my wife and children.

Keeping personal information private is prudent and often called for.

Yes, because I don't have rocks in my head. The only potentially identifying information I've divulged here is what college I went to.

But why do Christians have anything to hide? Aren't we protected against all harm by our Lord?

And JohnV, what did you do about the harrasser? have him arrested stalking I'd hope, or shoot him in the name of Jesus.

You betcha. There are a lot of nut cases in cyberspace, not all of whom are benign. I share what information I want with whom I want. Why provide an easy target in such situations? Some members know a good deal about me, others practically nothing.

For long-time posters, their records pretty much identify what they stand for and believe in; that's about all you can ask for in this medium.

Oh, OK, but what about the BB members get togethers I've read about, aren't the persons who attend taking the same risks?

Huh? Don't Christians get ill, have car accidents, have their houses burglarized, break their arms, twist their ankles, catch pneumonia, etc? Or do bad things only happen to people whose faith isn't strong enough?

I also don't saunter across eight-lane highways, stand out in lightning storms, run into the paths of tornadoes and walk down dark alleyways in the belief that I'm "protected against all harm by our Lord." God gave us brains; we should use them.

That's a personal decision; I choose not to take such risks.

We have a git-together every Sunday at my church, Kingdom Baptist. I'll be the one clapping my hands real loud during praise and worship!

I've read accounts similar to John's and I know one pastor that had one person send false stories to the pastor's board that caused the pastor great problems.

I've been on boards since the beginning and have found some that I have gotten to know via email, but seldom.

You have no idea who is on the other end.

Christians are humans and do dumb things.

Being unknown has an advantage. Found a man quoting some of my material as his own once :) He was very surprised to hear from me.

Ive seen this idea alot lately....that we ought to just be offering our personal information freely on the internet as if God is going to save us from our own "stupidity". A man in my church just signed up on another message board where I am too, and he kind of let it be known how surprised he was that he was the only one who had used his real name. His FULL real name.

If it were true that God saves His children from ALL bad things happening to them, then we'd never have our identities stolen because we put ALL our info out there on the web, no Christian would ever be stalked by a stranger, and Christians wouldn't ever be taken advantage of by people they trusted blindly.

He does tell us to be harmless as doves, but wise as serpents.

BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE! If you call within the next 30 seconds, I'll cut out one of the payments and tell you not only how many cats are in the household but also HOW MANY CATS ARE IN THE EXTENDED FAMILY!

    OPERATORS ARE STANDING BY!
