Baloney. Maybe you should move. If you are a good mechanical engineer, then you would be hired quickly in this area. Sexism, baloney. Age discrimination, baloney. If your work is good and makes your employer the most potential money, he would hire you if you were 120 years old. If you are the best, he would hire you even if he detested you.
Just from what I have seen on here, I have a sneaking suspicion that at some point in the application process, your I hate men card comes out and is detected by your potential employer. If so, then you are really going to have to be good.
A man I eat breakfast with most Saturdays is bumping 90. He has tried to retire for the last 25 years. He can't. Every time he tells his employer he is retiring, they throw crazy money at him. Why? Because he has a knack for figuring out how to build something that is just as good as the competition and he is able to figure out how to build it a lot cheaper. I guarantee, promise, double dog promise; that if he retired today, he could have a job tomorrow; walking stick and all.
What about OUR dreamers? It's time America stand for it's people ...

Payroll Taxes Savings Calculator < Hiring J1 Students | SeasonalStaff.org.
the employer tax burden is significantly less, and they can still pay these people as low a wage as possible. The GOP is on the Cheap Labor Express and your party is blowing the horn -
Nevada? I would try the state department fo engineering, or whatever it's called down there - it won't pay well but the benefits package will be awesome.
Mechanical engineering, if that's anything like IT, the whole field is overrun with HiB's:
US H-1B visa for specialty workers
Employers love them because they can get a good Indian programmer dirt cheap and all they have to do is advertise the job with a billion requirements and then claim no American can fill it. You can still find work in the IT field but you have to be able to pass a background check if the company is citizens-only, which many seem to be trending toward. finally. -

Hmm, all the baloney in this thread. I need to make a sandwich.
Little American cheese would help. Kraft - none of that plastic cheese stuff for phony baloney

Of course, it is not all to be laid at the feet of the illegals. This crap would never have happened had our elected leaders done what they swore to do in their oath of office. Anyone remember the words, protect this country against enemies both foreign and domestic! Liberals and do-gooders are as much to blame for the mess we have today, as those who don't have any shame for coming over the borders. -

Someone on this forum mentioned jobs Americans will not do...
Well I have two teenage boys that do everything from mowing, weed eating, hauling, picking strawberries. They are always looking for jobs to do, but why hire them, when you can pay someone under the table next to nothing. My big strong hardworking boys ain't looking for 20 dollar an hour, but yeah, the do ask more than the cost of repairs of their lawnmowers they had to buy.
There is NO job American won't do, but having to pay taxes sure puts them in with those that don't. I once got a job after retiring repairing small motors and such at a local lawnmower company. I enjoyed the work and just did it to pass the time and have some extra blow dough (mostly because I was driving the wife crazy at home). I got to watching how the company worked, hiring illegals. They paid the illegals cash and they showed up in the morning to get mowing orders and their equipment. But one day one of them wrecked the truck and took off running instead of waiting for the police to arrive. The owner of the business sent a American to claim the truck and paid for the damage done and nothing else was said about the matter. The police didn't pursue the matter, they didn't care if he had drivers licensees or anything. It made me sick.
To compete other lawn services had to do the same thing. Hire illegals and cook the books. Thus kids today that want to make a little money don't really have a fair ticket to ride. Their Dreams don't matter to liberals.
I guess American dreamers like my kids don't matter. Your cheap labor comes first. -

Come on ctb, PROVE IT. Prove your claim that teens don't want to work. I know a ton through the church, and the jobs just aren't there! So to borrow a phrase from you: Prove it, Where's the proof. Where's the beef!? -

It's not like the jobs aren't there. The ice cream still needs scooping. A Tilt-a-Whirl doesn't run itself. And that floppy, weirdly heavy rubber frog that somersaults toward the rotating lily pads? Hit or miss, someone's got to bring it back to the catapult for the next lucky player. The work of an American summer remains, sticky and sweet as cotton candy, which doesn't sell itself either.
But when Jenkinson's Boardwalk went looking for seasonal employees last year, the response was not at all what the company expected. To fill some 1,200 summer vacancies, an Easter-time job fair drew just 400 people. Applications did bounce up this year, but not nearly enough to reverse a grave trend that summer employers have noticed well beyond the Jersey Shore.
"It is getting harder to find students that will work," says Toby Wolf, director of marketing at the boardwalk. "Each year it's getting harder and harder. None of us has been able to pinpoint why. Is it a change in society as a whole?"
This is a question to chew over on the long road trip from Glacier National Park--where concessions could be staffed by Bulgarians on work-study visas--to Maine, which each summer struggles to fill the lifeguard chairs above its beaches. The same story holds at the water attractions at Wisconsin Dells and on Cedar Point's roller coasters in Sandusky, Ohio. As a nation, we have lately endured the demise of comity and the fracture of factual truth. Are we now witnessing the slow death of the summer job?

care of you even if you dont work. So why should they - if their parent did not.
I will give you one case - granted - its only one - and it was 40 years ago - but the principal is the same. I was a district manager for a newspaper
district. I needed some paperboys. I found one 12 year old that was interested- but his dad said that he would not let his son work for such little pay.
Granted you will not get rich on a paper route, but it teaches many things as well gives you a few dollars - sufficient for a pre-teen. -

Asian Indian competition destroyed many American careers in the IT field particularly in the independent contractor sector.
I don't blame the grunts. They are opportunistic just like me and I befriended many.
In particular I liked a Dalit (untouchable) gentleman and thoroughly enjoyed talking, working and eating with, taking walks with him to the suppressed anger of his upperclass countrymen.
It was obvious to me they were ANGRY but that only inflamed my own flesh to provoke them.

One of my granddaughters had no problem getting a job in a fast food restaurant here in the Olympia WA area when she moved out from Massachusetts.
3 Days into her search she had a job (among multiple probabilities).
She was even able to juggle her hours around her college courses at St Martins University (for a while).

(doesn't mean you would be full-time though)
I had applied at a dollar store once - told the manager I could only work about 3 days a week- and at certain hours.
I was told that I had to be available at any time.
Hmm- they lost a great potential employee. -
But she landed an evening nanny job right away!

Moving for a job...not gonna happen again. Did it twice, tired of moving.
Problems with jobs: Yes, over 50 and female are at the top of the list. Stupid interview questions such as "where do you see yourself in 10 years"...in 10 years I want to retire! Another one "how does your husband feel about you working overtime?" Like it's any of your business buddy, but if he has an issue that's between me and him (he never has had an issue before). Or the lovely "how do you feel about working in a male dominated environment"? Gee...if I had an issue with that I'd have never gone into a STEM field. There's also the software issue. I've used a few different design packages and pick them up pretty quickly. HOWEVER...if you're not FULLY conversant in whatever the company is currently using, forget it. I spent my career using Dassault and Autodesk products. But, if they're using Bentley or Smart Plant...well...forget it. Companies are also looking for contract workers...3-12 months and then you're back on the hunt. Nope...lousy pay, crummy per diem and having to maintain a second residence for my husband (who's job/career is here where we live) doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Last but not least is the $$ issue. I have years of experience and I think being offered 15 bucks an hour and no benefits is an insult. Look, I don't get out of bed at the crack of dawn for less than 25 and full bennies. So, I freelance here and there...a little drafting/design, a little tech writing, a little tutoring, a little teaching (I'm an AutoCAD certified professional). When I work, I work. When I don't, I don't. Right now I don't. I was in a car accident about 5 months ago and still having serious problems from being injured in it.
I do not "hate" men. I hate men that think that by virtue of a Y chromosome they are automatically smarter than I am. Those are the ones I have fun with! I don't know where anyone got the idea I "hate" men. I love most men, my husband, sons and grandson especially...I just have issues with idiots who don't have enough brain power to blow their noses who think they know it all. -
On an evaluation interview I was asked "what is your 5 year goal"?
My answer "not to die of a heart attack" (really!).
I received a shocked look from my manager but later she laughed and periodically that day she walked by my office and we both chuckled.
