The term "hyper-fundamentalist" has been used a number of times recently in this forum. I am wondering what the people who use the term intend to convey. Thanks.

Someone who is more fundamentalist than me.
Hey, that makes you ALL hyper-fundamentalists!
In all seriousness, I had never realized that there were shades to fundamentalism until I came here.
I suppose the following characteristics might identify a "hyper-fundamentalist":
- the belief that women should not work outside the home
- the belief that the King James Bible is somehow superior to other translations because, well, I still don't understand why - but I'm sure it makes sense to them
- the belief that "true" Christians wear certain clothes, don't frequent certain establishments, etc.

Well I guess Joshua's list makes me a 1.5 point hyper fundamentalist. LOL
NKJV for me! ASV, RSV are just fine too.
Mommies... belong at home.
Stay out of bars and ugly movies but wear pants.
Do I get extra points tho for being a pro-life Republican who teaches S/S and AWANA? Surely I can rack up some points SOME how!

Legalists are often hyperfundamentalists, but not all hyperfundamentalists are legalists.
Litmus test: If someone referrs to a moderate or conservative Christian as a "liberal", they're most likely a hyperfundamentalist. -
A hyper-fundamentalist practices one or more of the following:
1. KJV-Onlyism
2. Jack Hyles type hero worship
3. Separation over church polity or other Rom. 14 type issues
4. Undue emphasis on some issues of dress (Note: I believe a true fundamentalist will not ignore issues of dress or modesty)
5. An emphasis on soul winning to the exclusion of personal holiness or God's glory.
6. An over-emphasis on numbers, especially concerning church size, converts, and baptisms.

I have never been called a hyper-fundamentalist. I do get hyper about some things, but never about fundamentalism. Never heard the term before.
Cheers,

A hyper fundamentalist is much the same as an overzeolous legalist. They don't stop at personal observances of what they believe the Bible says a Christian should believe or do but will hunt down and beat up anyone who doesn't believe like they do. And think they have God's blessing when doing so.

Aefting, you forgot to mention anyone who thinks Jack Chick is a cool guy.

Okay guys, you're making me dizzy! First Joshua's test finds me to be a 1.5 H/F. Massdak lowers me to a 1. JohnV mentions the word liberal and makes me a fullfledge H/F member and then using Andy's test I'm just a regular SBC. Whew..... My head is spinning! Or maybe I'm a charismatic and just got slain and didn't know it!

Hyper-deceived?
Every Baptist I've ever met who is self-professed "moderate" is, in truth, liberal. NOT a modernist like some of those on the FAR left. But certainly not "middle of the road" as "moderate" implies.
It is a word redefined by SBC so as not to make liberals within the convention look so bad.
But if we were honest, a rose is a rose is a rose . . -
So now that you've met your first one, what to do??
BTW - I used the word long b4 the SBC used it. Besides, while am an SBC'er, I don't use the the SBC as my linguistic source ;) -

I 'ope she wears trousers too, by gum!

Hubby wants to know if a hyper fundamentalist is a Christian with ADD! LOL
How about just being brothers and sisters in Christ!

what bothers me are all those so-called hyperfundamentalists who in reality are nothing more than waffling, compromising christ denying heretics....

When Jesus dealt with the Pharisees and Sadducees He dealt withy those who be much like people today. But as I have read the gospels He always went back to what God wanted from the beginning. Certainly he did not conform with the religious zealots of the day. But He always pointed to the essence of real life-- arelationship with God. One who knows God does not get very coincerned abotu the religious class but is cioncerned about those who know they need a physician-- those who know they are unrighteous and need the savior. When we know God the liberals, religious zealots and any other name brand will not like us because we do not conform to their religious ways but God's.

aefting,
I like your list. Let me add a few more:
A Hyper-Fundamentalist is:
1. So concerned about separation from the world that he lives in a hyperfundamentalist world of his own.
2. So isolated from the unsaved, he must make periodic evangelistic "raids" into neighborhoods, instead of merely talking to people he knows and meets naturally.
3. Habitually decrying the evils of Catholicism, while treating his own spiritual leader like a Pope.
4. Not aquainted with many non-hyper-fundamentalist Christians, yet is fully aware of all their false doctrines and practices.
5. More interested in quoting scripture than practicing it.
6. Convinced that legalism is concerned only with the doctrines of salvation.
7. Impossible to reason with until God brings him to his knees.
Yes, I have some personal experiance!

Dr Bob,
you will have to throw me in with the very conservative moderates.
In fact I lean to the calvinist side of the of the ledger and am pre melinial dispensational in my beliefs.
The only real difference we might have is my view of women in ministry, which I dont think is a fellowship breaker!
