Which Bible verses do you consider to be the most frequently taken out of context and applied to just about everything? Our pastor just finished up a six month series on the book of Phillipians and it contains one of the most, if not the most misquoted, taken out of context verses ever.
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Phillipians 4:13
This is used by just about anyone that has some sort of job or function that requires a degree of difficulty or adversity. Athletes, students, soldiers, etc. The verse is about Christians being content no matter what their circumstances, and is not about being able to do super human things requiring physical strength.
Runner up:
Judge not, that you be not judged. Matthew 7:1
Used by people as a way to tell anyone that might disagree with them not to judge them about anything.
Notable others:
But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. Matt. 5:39
"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future". Jeremiah 29:11

The most misunderstood verse is the bible: John 3:16.

And I don't want to get into a Cal/non-Cal debate over it. -
If you think it is that simple you are one of those who fail to understand it.

Matthew 7:1 was my pick from reading the title.

II Chronicles 7:14. It has nothing to do with the good ole USA. It is about the covenant relationship w the Nation of Israel in the OT
Greater love hath no man than this that a man lay down his life for his brother. It is a statement that Jesus is making About Himself. He is the one who came to lay down His life for us. It has nothing to do with a soldier in a foxhole -

Most people understand the verse to be saying "God loved the world so much that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life."
Unfortunately, most people are wrong. :)
The actual meaning of the verse is "God, in this way, loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life."
God's love for the world is personified in His Son. To reject the Son is to reject the love of God. :)
Most English speakers have forgotten that "so" can mean "in this manner." We still occasionally use it that way when we say, "In order to do that you have to do so and so" as we explain the actions necessary. -

Agree II Ptr 3:9 is God's promise to save the "elect" feom every nation and tongue. It is not a promise to literally save everyone. If God decreed that "all men" meaning iterally everyone who ever lived to be saved then there would be no hell-all men would be saved without exclusion

Agree:
14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up;
15 that whosoever believeth may in him have eternal life. Jn 3
8 And Jehovah said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a standard: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he seeth it, shall live. Nu 21
Note that the brazen serpent was lifted up for those that were bitten.
.........They that are whole have no need of a physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners. Mk 2:17
6 Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Mt 5
It is the Spirit working within His children that causes them to feel their need for the Savior.
Note that God has ALREADY wrought within those that come to the light:
21 But he that doeth the truth cometh to the light, that his works may be made manifest, that they have been wrought in God. Jn 3
That's what Christ was telling Nicodemus. Before one can enter, or even see the kingdom of God he must FIRST be born from above. -
The entire Bible, the Word in whole, in fact is a means of light given unto all in the world by a God of Love and the truths within it for which He sacrificed His Son, Jesus, amounts to a genuine invitation of mercy and grace for “whosoever” believes and loves the truth of His words.
(Joh 1:9) That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
…I'm afraid the above doctrine of grace may not be as big and inclusive as the doctrine of grace that I preach. ;)
But here is the truth:
(Rom 10:9) That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
(Rom 10:10) For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
(Rom 10:11) For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
(Rom 10:12) For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.
(Rom 10:13) For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Merry Christmas to all!

Proverbs 21:19....or is that that most often applicable but least quoted verse?.....I can't remember. :)

Why is every thread a "shove Calvinism down your throat" thread? My Goodness.
-
Instead it should be: Oh my imputed goodness. -

It should be something like :"I can do all these things through him who gives me strength."
Just what are "these things" you may ask? Why what has been listed in verses 11-12. -
