Is there any vestige of "Christian" left in these organizations?
A new church group here in town contacted the "Y" to rent a meeting room for Sunday Services.
Gal said "What? Do you think we are a CHRISTIAN organization?" When asked was YMCA meant, she did not know.
Can't make this up. Really sad. Our "Y" is just a glorified health club, with an occasional dance for kids.
What's your experience?

I concur with your findings. The secularization of the YMCA/YWCA is complete. It is generally viewed here as cheap lodging for singles and convenient "work-out" rooms.
I fear it is the way of all well-meaning organizations who attempt to evangelize apart from the local church. Shows how we better get down to business and build the local church; the one ordained organization in the New Testament.

As the acronym says, it's a "men's" and "women's" organization before it's a "christian" organization.
But the fact remains that they're providing an important service to the community in a Christlike manner. -
See this thread - then all your questions will be answered. It is really a pitiful thing. :(

Is your fear that under Patricia Ireland's leadership, the YWCA is going to become a political activist machine? Just curious. I have no opinion on the matter one way or another. Would opposition be appropriate if, for example, she were to become president of Habitat for Humanity, for example?

The Y M & W C A used to be so different. I remember swimming at the Y with my cousins when I was a young teenager...I really wouldn't think of having my children go there now.
I read a book not too long ago about a woman who was a leading advocate for the rights of the elderly. It was called "No Stone Unturned" She spoke of the Y being very strong in political and social advocacy during the second world war and the years following. I'm not sure why this new CEO is making anyone think this is something new or odd. I appologize that I don't have the book with me to quote from, It is my mothers and it was only on loan. -
The Young Men's Christian Associations seek to unite those young men who, regarding Jesus Christ as their God and Saviour, according to the Holy Scriptures, desire to be his disciples in their faith and in their life, and to associate their efforts for the extension of his Kingdom amongst young men.
Any differences of opinion on other subjects, however important in themselves, shall not interfere with the harmonious relations of the constituent members and associates of the World Alliance.

This was the founding principle, when in 1844, George Williams founded the YMCA in London, England.
When I was a young lad, the YMCA held regular meetings of prayer, Bible study and studies in Christian living. It was an attempt to reach the unreached in London. Sports, in particular, swimming, was used as a medium to attract youth.

In other words, the way it's labeled it's a Christian Organization FOR young Men/Women.
Take away the CHRISTIAN, and there is no "organization" for the Young M/W
What it is in reality now is a totally seperate discussion, & since I've had no association with them in some 50 years, I'll pass on the comments! -
This is typical of many organizations. They have principles and they have actions. BOTH must be right before you can support them. If their principles are right and their actions are wrong, don't support them. If their principles are wrong but their actions are (seemingly) right then don't support them. Just because the YMCA and/or the YWCA do some good things is not a reason to support the organization. And before you ask, No, they don't have to be perfect. There are however, some deal breakers. Hiring a person of the character of Patricia Ireland as their leader IS a deal breaker.

I am really saddened by this... but , what can we do about this?
-
Hey Mark,
Easy answer: NOTHING.
If there is anything "Christian" left in the YWCA, Patricia Ireland will eradicate it. -
Sue -
It's worse than that -- by keeping "Christian" in the name itself, they are slandering the name of Christ. The witness they present is false where that name is concerned. The choice of their new leading officer confirms that.

Who is this Patricia Ireland? Are you talking about the YM/YWCA's in the USA? There are other countries and there is an international office.

Evil, evil woman. -

Of course other countries count! As long as there are souls that need to be saved; why wouldn't a country count??? -

Kelly, each person is either a slave to sin or a slave to righteousness. Which do you think Ireland is?
And who is the father of lies?
Some people just put two and two together.
